Open Mic Night: We need to watch it with Rachel Dolezal

Rachel Dolezal, Appearance, Appropriation, and the Gender Transitioning Fallacy

Because if she does submit to genetic testing and the results come back even remotely saying anything in her favor...she will return to the media with a vengeance.  I foresee a memoir, a book tour, a fat check from Lifetime....

  1. Shudder is right. Because I see a whole slew of whites opting-in as light-skinned, Pink-skinned ambassadors, opening the white race up to new possibilities. Having a form of blackness, but without all that bitter aftertaste.Your culture will adapt to service us.

As Michael P. Jeffries puts it: "Scholars and cultural critics have long noted that because white culture is viewed as either nonexistent or boring, whites consume and adopt nonwhite styles and practices to build hip and exotic identities. And since whites can “wear” blackness without the threat of being harassed or murdered by police for no reason, the thrill of performing blackness is far less risky than real life as a black person. Moreover, whites can stop the performance whenever they like and return to being racially unmarked."

I imagine she'll be hooking up with Henry Louis Gates to get this Black thing settled once and for all. “Just one drop Henry... that's all I need.” Like we’ve seen many many times. When something makes whites uncomfortable they change the rules, then lock it down so it can’t be messed with.

Exclusive: Investigation of Rachel Dolezal's roots reveals she has no black relatives dating back to 1671 - her ancestors came to the US from Europe and have no bloodlines linking them to slaves or Africa:

Rachel Dolezal has no genealogical claim whatsoever that she is black, going back through the last four centuries, an investigation by Daily Mail Online has revealed. The woman who sparked a national debate on race has no black relatives dating back to 1671; in fact her family were entirely white including some who were Mormons. Archives show that Rachel’s ancestors came to the US from Europe and have no bloodlines linking them to slaves or Africa.

I ain't gonna lie, Mr. Gates has his work cut out for him.

  4. Most people including whites if they take a genetic test will have some African blood in them, so I don't know if that's the results she is looking for but she is still not a black woman. I just fear this becoming another stupid trend with white people, claiming to be black while keeping every last bit of their white privilege. Anything to escape white culpabilty in racism and being branded racist.

Privilege means just that. Its means the possibilities are endless. Its means whites can be whatever they choose to be, whether that’s Native Hawaiian (without whiteness being a detriment), Indigenous American or fully-fledged Japanese. One day you’ll Google Japanese and instead of seeing an individual with Asian traits, you’ll see nothing but Europeans in the search results. It means they can now dabble in blackness the way an artist takes from his palette, but claim the whole. I wouldn’t be surprised if exotic terms like Quadroon, Octoroon- Quintroon and Macaroon... Macaroon? Became fashionable again. If it can be said the Borg have neither color nor culture then this describe white people to a T. Ostensibly, Whiteness is the absence of color, hence whiteness can be thought of as the absence of culture. Therefore they readily appropriate, to fill whatever is lacking.

    1. I recall that in South Africa, the Chinese had the right to call themselves Black to get certain benefits from the government. This happened a few years ago.

It is estimated that approximately 20% of White Americans possess Black ancestry. Although, one would have to do extensive research on someone's family tree as those DNA tests that, allegedly, tell you how much Black, White, Asian, Native American a person is. For anyone thinking about taking one of those tests, don't. They are not accurate and seriously flawed.

  6. Sorry for being absent for so long. Hope I'm not late to the party.

I don't know what's going on inside that woman's head. One can guess that she's sees 'blackness', or what she thinks is blackness, as a means to escape her life, kinda like putting on a costume and playing pretend as if you're going to a comic convention. All in all, when she wants to, she can become white whenever she wants to or whenever she thinks it's 'right' to do so. Whatever the reason, Rachel duped a lot of people by playing make-believe. So much for those lessons about being yourself.

Very good point. To me her situation is more like The Deathly Hallows. Her tan/weave acts much like the Cloak of Invisibility, effectively shrouding her from white spaces. [The most invisible Americans of all may be African-American women]. Likewise, as long as she remains concealed she’s absolved of historical torts, racial guilt- and post-family dynamics. Her cell phone (or Seeker) acts much like the Resurrection Stone. Manipulating the item properly allows her to summon deceased loved ones (Her Real Parents). Her Privilege acts much like the Elder Wand. For with it comes unimaginable license used strictly for the benefit of its bearer. Allowing her to enjoy prominence, relevancy and centrality: whenever its suits her.
