Mortal Kombat X

(h/t mrkareemruiz)

Must be that time of the decade.

Mortal Kombat returns April 14th with the tenth game in its series, and to be fair, a lot of the excitement is justified. For one....

See, I wasn't even going to bother with this one after the fuckery which occurred last time, but then they brought Tanya back and so now I have to pay attention.

What I've learned so far

#1 - Jade is dead and her signature moves have been passed onto Kitana in her "Mournful" variation.  See, every character has three - incarnations, I guess? - of themselves in this game, and in Kitana's Mournful variation, she apparently honors Jade by filling in for her part-time while Jade fans are wondering just WTF the writers were thinking.

#2 - Friggin' Tanya a.k.a. The Baddest Bitch in MK History is back and looking white-washed as hell.  And the bangs...why is she still rocking those tired-ass bangs?  It's been eleven years.  And will that outfit be getting some sort of explanation in the game?

#3 - Since the game spans 25 years, we see some "veterans" looking aged (Johnny, Sonya, Kenshi, Jax, etc.) and we meet their kids.  This means we get to meet Jacqueline "Jacqui" Briggs, daughter of Jax Briggs and some as-yet-unnamed woman (quelle surprise).  She's also currently co-starring the Mortal Kombat X comics which act as some sort of prequel.

Since Jade is gone and Tanya is back, I'm beginning to wonder of MK subscribes to some sort of 1-2 Negress maximum in their games.  I suppose after MK9, two black women appearing in the same game is, like, generous or something?

*sigh*  Count the fail.

Let me pause here for a minute.  For two decades, Mortal Kombat has been at times legendary and other times infamous for going all-out with (some) of the female ensembles (and some guys too).  Kitana, for example, looks fierce in the new game -

- but that was the best they could think of for Jacqui Briggs and Tanya????

I'm hoping when the game finally drops, Jacqui's and Tanya's "variations" will at least attempt to display something resembling a creative fashion sense.

#4 - MK's pretty much always getting ish wrong when it comes to the sistahs, so I'm beginning to think the only reason I bother to check in every few years is that I know there's one thing they'll always get right.

*pops collar* Twenty years runnin' and that train ain't never been late, y'all.

  1. This will be interesting, to say the least.

  2. At this point, nothing the Mortal Kombat devs fuck up surprises me. Come MK 11 I wouldn't be surprised if the entire cast was suddenly white people.

I do like the "controversy" they started by toning down the sexualization of the female characters, though. It shows that taking even the faintest half-step in something vaguely akin to the right direction can set off manchildish tantrums.
