Operation: Lollipop...Huh?

By now some of you have read about "Operation: Lollipop", in which white male trolls from some ratchest-ass website for MRAs and PUAs posed as several women and started creating havoc in feminist circles.  Okay...LaQueeta Jones flashback.

What had me raising my eyebrow, though, was that many of them posed as "sassy" black women.
Though pretending to be a woman to harass other women is troubling enough, even more worrisome is the coordinated attack against Black women. The men of “Operation: Lollipop” that have assumed identities—some even of “sassy” Black women—show they don’t just hate women, but are particularly disturbed and loathsome of empowered, outspoken Black women.

Thankfully, Black women on Twitter are undeterred by this latest assault, fighting back vigorously while vowing to continuing to build diverse coalitions that will affect change
. (Source)
To give y'all some perspective, while browsing the comments on Clutch Magazine, the first line of this one jumped right out at me:

Exactly.  How the hell did black women get caught in this crossfire?  Like, when I think of MRA- and PUA-type guys, I think of hordes of Elliot Rodgers sitting at their computers all day bitching at the fact that the hot blondes they want don't want them back.  And when that gets old, the really creepy ones start talking about exploiting going to countries like Thailand to find a wife.

So...how exactly did black women come up in the conversation?  Like, what even prompted them to think of us?

I'm more confused than I am annoyed and here's why:

1) I get that these pieces of shit are racist pieces of shit.  That sort of just goes without saying.  That being said, however, I'm still fuzzy on exactly how we factored into their master plan.

Like, say the whole point of your website is that you're lonely, horny, totally lame, and obsessed with white womanhood.  So you hop on over to black women's sites...for what?  What exactly does this accomplish?  Trolling is attention-whoring.  Why do these men want our attention?

From what I understand, they got spanked.  In public.  And now, they 've got an army of feminists/online activists more united and committed to their cause than before.  In fact, I suspect this stunt actually turned some enemies into allies.

And all this gets them laid...how, exactly?

2) How did we come up in their conversations?  I'm still not grasping how we got from point A to B on that one.  They think that women like us are ugly and inferior.  For women like us, they don't even make a blip our radar.  Hell, the only time we notice them is when they're committing mass murder on the news.

So what if we're empowered and outspoken?  What does that have to do with them?  We don't even talk to them.  Like I said, unless they're on the news, we don't even talk about them. And even then, we just want to study them from a distance.
The computer world has long been heavily white and very masculine, and the trolls at 4chan aim to keep it that way. They just don't want black and brown people, and especially black and brown women, to be using "their" space. Their upbringing and this society's assumptions about white masculinity make them feel not as if this is a terrible they are doing, but simply defending their birthright. (Source)
But why especially us?  We keep coming back to that.

This news comes to me hot on the heels of the "fan letter" which recently triggered quite a conversation here at the Bar, and yes I think they are intertwined in that this isn't about black and brown women using the web.

'Cause let's face it: if hordes of black and brown women were using the web to gush over white boys, our use of the internet wouldn't be an issue.

  1. I know. It's a repeat of the Hugo Schwyzer abuse of WOC bloggers such as Mikki Kendall etc. It's beyond disgusting. Those cowardly racist white guys attack feminism by attacking Black women bloggers at Twitter. It's been going on since last week. What's worse is that those guys have defenders. Other racist white men and women, even some non-Black POC. Disgusting display of racialized sexism in cyberspace.

  2. Trolling as I understand it is the opposite of normalcy, it wreaks havoc on forums and disrupts the natural segue of an on-going narrative. All done with the calculated intent of inciting discord amongst its members. White males love this to no end! In the white male mind all black women are sassy unless proved otherwise, for most lack exposure to black women as a whole (and minorities in general). The white male has learned to control the world-narrative by disseminating disinformation and propaganda, particularly in political circles where Special Interest Groups are used as fronts to sway public opinion or funnel dark money.

From what I understand, they got spanked. In public. And now, they 've got an army of feminists/online activists more united and committed to their cause than before. In fact, I suspect this stunt actually turned some enemies into allies. And all this gets them laid...how, exactly?

As I’ve said before the white male uses hypocrisy as means to an end its how he’s operated for hundreds of years, turning one culture against another or one race against another. Divide and Conquer. If he can fragment black women they’re less formidable as a force because he has an image to protect. The same practices were employed with much success against ACORN and Shirley Sherrod. His message to black women is, “these are just a few bad apples messing it up for the rest of us. We’re still your best choice in a mate or sexual partner.”

So what if we're empowered and outspoken? What does that have to do with them? We don't even talk to them. Like I said, unless they're on the news, we don't even talk about them. And even then, we just want to study them from a distance.

If you’re empowered and outspoken (especially on a world forum) it demonstrates you can affect public opinion, this would threaten the altruistic image they’ve fashioned for themselves.

This desire to project an archetype of himself as patriarch, benevolent hero, (selfless to a fault), strength incarnate- comes at a cost. For other cultures to view him as such he must inject himself (usually through coercion) into their world-view. This he does while simultaneously usurping, and corrupting the very societies he befriends. He is by definition a decimator of custom and convention unless it’s his own. He has no interest in the state of people of color save for the sole purpose of elevating his station above them. If the covers were pulled back to expose these cads as they really are would this nation continue to hold them in such high esteem?

"'Cause let's face it: if hordes of black and brown women were using the web to gush over white boys, our use of the internet wouldn't be an issue."

Their aim again is to refocus the narrative to that end. Remember many, many white males see themselves as a racially-oppressed class. To them, they’re merely defending their birthright as the true alpha males in a culture that waxes more brown as the days are long.

And I think that's where the harassment of black women comes in. A lot of us tend to see them as wimpy, whinny, not masculine, no swagger, bigots with small penises, or just "a white boy". With centuries of degrading and devaluing black females and black womanhood, we simply returned the favor by not validating them as men, let alone alpha males, and adding insult to injury we've placed the men they hate, fear and whom bring out the most insecurity in them, the black man, as our ideal man. White guys might have gotten some other races of women under their thumb, but black women generally, aren't having it.

      This excellently sums it up.

  3. It's really eating those cowards alive that they can't get next to us. I find it ironic how they call Black women the " angry ones ", when it's actually them. I mean..they are really obsessed with us. You don't see too many of us harassing others on their websites. They're not proving anything but stupidity. Their words go in on ear and come out of their other. Instead of getting mad about it, I just laugh at it because all of that anger will get the best of them..while we'll still be on this earth with a peace of mind. It's really frightening them knowing that the the U.S. will be a multicultural and they are doing anything to keep that dominance. They should let it go. They can't change what the good lord intended to happen.

    1. So true M. Those same white guys don't realize that some white, Asian, and Latina women aren't going to put up with his bs either. Black men are in popular culture today because of Civil Rights, Womens' Rights, and the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s. White men want to roll back all those gains, therin lies the attack on Black women. They want access to Black women before the Civil Rights Movement.

The Civil Rights Movement was lead by Black women and men. We just want our rights and to be left alone.

Don't white men realize that if they have kids with Black women, the kids are not white. They don't want to marry Black women, they just don't like our choices. One of the choices is not to be with guys who started all the isms in the world and I don't care if I upset their fee fees because they've historically used and abuse people and their dominance is coming to an end, thank God for that.

    2. Yep..I still think about some of those those words that my late grandmother, mom and other people of their generation. In so many words they said that "The bottom rail(or something in that realm) would raise to the top". It's sure is looking as that the world is heading toward that way and I'm loving every bit of it.

  4. I think this all boils down to the lack of sexual accesss to black women. They can say date, marriage, etc. all they want but this is about sex and the lack of access to it at the hands of black women. They always go on and on about us being ugly, ghetto, undesirable, having an attitude and that's why they don't want us, but we all know sex doesn't care about any of that. The truth is the lack of sex between us isn't because of our lack of appeal to them but their lack of appeal to us! That's why you get a lot of angry white or whitish guys a la Elliot Rogers get mad when he sees nonwhite guys especially black with white girls. I've also heard other races of men say when their race of women date other races of men especially when they date black men, why do they want to be with a black guy and they start naming a few of the things said in the "fan letter" but go on to say: as revenge we (insert race of men) should go out and f*ck, not date, not marry, not even a kinder version "sleep with", "have sex with " but f*ck black women or "their women". However they always seem to hit that brick wall of black women not black men, but black women shutting them down fast with a simple "no" sometimes an "I don't think so". Women + agency + sex = men wreaking havoc especially when it's black women having agency over ourselves, a big no no. After all we're suppose to be whores, hoes, jezabels, sluts, chickenheads that will holla fo a dolla, do sumthin' strange for some change, that can get enough sex right?

    2. Hi, short time lurker here:

I love the point you make about us being nothing more than "sour grapes" to White men.
Basically demeaning what you'll never be able to get.

But also there's a another thing:

There's a # out there about Black Feminism called "feminismisforwhitewomen, and these trolls may have stumbled over this little schism in the ranks of the feminasphere, and decided to take advantage of that. If they can sow dissension between the different kinds of feminism that exists and not have any blame fall on them for it (and I think that was their plan, but they're clumsy ,stupid creatures so their plan backfired), they believe somehow they can benefit from it. If they can keep the different races of feminists apart, then they can make the argument to White women to turn to White men because "See, those women don't care about you like we do.. Just give up this whole feminism thing and we can protect you from those angry WoC."

So you see, it's not anything we did or didn't do exactly. I think they may have been taking advantage of a very real schism in feminist politics.

    2. Yep. I don't know why they keep spewing this hate towards us. We're not going to cry and say we're sorry because we have nothing to feel bad about. That's their problem.

The man willingly laid in bed with people who'd kill him given half the chance because he was sore over a hash-tag. Not with what the hash-tag raised, but that it existed.

White feminists are mostly scared shitless about a POC taking them to task over intersectional issues. These trolls impersonated black women to embarass the hell out of white feminists. Now that they have been exposed, they have also cast doubt on POC posting on Twitter as being actual POC's.
