Ebony Wilkerson is not Susan Smith

By now many of you have read about Ebony Wilkerson, the pregnant mom from South Carolina who drove herself and three children into the ocean.  Now, for those of you who are just now reading about this, everyone is alive and as well as they could be, and Wilkerson's bail has been set at $1.2 million.

Her children apparently rolled down the windows and called for help, and her 9-year-old went head to head with her for the steering wheel, so...mad props to the kids.  They deserve the Erica Pratt Award.  After they were rescued they flat-out told the cops she'd tried to kill them (I'm guessing to avoid any misunderstanding), and that she told them she was taking them to a better place so they needed to just close their eyes and go to sleep.

Mind you, I'm hearing the story from my boss and reading about it online, and my boss is telling me that on Twitter, folks were comparing Wilkerson to Susan Smith.  Immediately, I thought, Uh...no.  Smith packed her kids off into the car and let them roll into the lake while keeping her own ass on dry land.  She then blamed their disappearance on an imaginary black man.  Wilkerson, on the other hand, made sure have have a front row seat for her catastrophic decision.

Smith strikes me as being a scheming sociopath.  Wilkerson strikes me as being genuinely cray.

What do y'all think?

  1. You took the words right out of my mouth. Those are the exact comparisons I would have used against Susan Smith.

Why I'm not surprised at Ebony's bail amount? Don't get me wrong, Ebony needed to be contained, but she needs to be in a mental hospital but 1.2 million dollars C'mon now..then again the State of Florida try to use Black folks as examples and abuse their power on.

Another difference I want to mention: where is the compassion for Ebony? I mean with Adam Lanza ,they tried to make him seem like a mentally disturbed young man who needed psychiatric help. Ebony.. on the other hand... gets none of that. Where are the the compassionate experts to speak about her and to see her more as a sick young woman than a bandit?

Girl, I wouldn't recommend we hold our breath on that one.

I'll take Genuinely Cray for $500, Alex.

Wilkerson clearly planned to take herself out with her children, whom I'm glad to see were all saved. Smith? Not so much. (Attempted) Murdering Moms they both may be, but that's as far as it goes.

  3. Ebony is no Susan. Not by a long shot. Smith wanted to save her own skin. Smith was a lying, sniveling, cowardly, sociopathic trick who endangered the black community.

Ebony, on the other hand, was in deep mental distress. She wanted to take her kids with her. She thought it was all over for her and her family. And she proceeded to end their lives and hers with them. (At least, that's how I see it.)

    1. Ooh, ditto, especially with all the things her sister is saying about her mental health and alleged domestic violence in the home.

Plus, didn't it come out that Smith wanted to free herself to be with a lover? If anything, Ebony's closer to Andrea Yates than Susan Smith.

Regarding the abuse allegations, I hope the police do their job and get to the bottom of it. Ebony might not be all there, but leaving the children in a possibly violent home will not help them.

    3. She needs some refuge and help, and it looks like she hasn't gotten much if any help if she's turning to murder-suicide. The children especially need help in dealing with this. It sounds like there's a lot going on.

  4. I agree with everything that’s been said. Ebony Wilkerson made no pretense of crying and grieving for her children as if they were still alive on national television. Whereas Susan Smith’s "heaves of anguish" kept white America riveted to the screen like an animal caught in headlights. Susan was given the benefit of doubt, “why would she lie about something like that?” many in America asked. Let us not dwell on the who and the how right now, for this delicate femme of Union, South Carolina needs our support.

Conversely, Ebony is booked & jailed immediately with lessor emphasis on evaluation and hospitalization. To whites what Miss Wilkerson did was criminal, not the fevered throes of a woman in crisis. Whites tend to focus more on skin color when weighing the legitimacy of mental illness. So consumed by the negativity that is black skin "they wax apathetic to any person of color genuinely afflicted with the disease". They even go as far as to say, "yeah she might be crazy, but she knew full-well what she was doing."

Yet the question of accountability with Whites is never examined thoroughly because Empathy is a Given as soon as news of the tragedy breaks. White People will equally identify with the shooter (Troubled family, Abuse) as well as the victims of mass murder. The virtue that is white skin blinds them to all other considerations so there Must be mitigating conditions as to why whites do wrong. Blacks? Meh, they’re just criminals, best to just get them off the streets.
