Why ABC owes Shonda Rhimes a blood debt

The White Girls' "Scandal"

Bar Patrons...funny story....
It's been a rough couple of weeks, ratingswise, for ABC's 9 and 10 p.m. Sunday shows. Last week's season premiere of "Revenge" was so-so in the ratings -- and even lower on the buzz meter, especially considering it aired opposite the series finale of "Breaking Bad" and the Season 3 return of "Homeland." Also scoring tepid numbers was the 10 p.m. debut of "Betrayal," a melodrama starring the not-particularly sizzling duo of Hannah Ware and Stuart Townsend.

It's not surprising viewers might be wary about returing to "Revenge." Consider the lingering hangover from last season, in which "Revenge" lost track of its soapy main story -- Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) seeking revenge! -- and got tangled in a tedious mess of a conspiracy plot involving some shadowy organization called The Initiative, which was even more boring than it sounds. No wonder viewers may be slow to get back on board.

Facing an even tougher road is "Betrayal," yet another show inspired by a Scandinavian series, this one a Dutch drama titled "Overspel." Hannah Ware -- who seems to be suffering from chronic depression -- plays a photographer who's married to an ambitious prosecutor. She stumbles into an intense mutual attraction with an attorney, played by Stuart Townsend.

They're surrounded by a boatload of supposed intrigue, complete with a powerful business mogul (James Cromwell) who looms threateningly, and whose daughter is married to Townsend's character. And then somebody gets murdered.

What should be sexy and suspenseful comes off as a sleep aid, which is probably why viewers are nodding off rather than staying up to watch.

TV Guide reports that "Betrayal" might be the next of the new fall season shows to get quickly canceled. The first cancellation of the season honors -- if that's the word -- goes to another ABC show, "Lucky 7," which only lasted two episodes before shuffling off to Buffalo.

As TV Guide reports, "Betrayal" followed an underwhelming debut with a drop of 27 percent for last night's episode, for a total of 4 million viewers.

I was flipping through channels and came across two very white news anchors gushing about how they can't wait for this week's episode of 'Scandal'. Yep, 'Scandal'.

ABC owes Ms. Rhimes more than a blood debt.

    1. Yeah.. I also heard that some White female viewers said that they want to be Olivia Pope. Shonda definitely has some power with people.

  2. So it wasn't just us. You know it has the series sucked when entertainment critics are downing it.

Really, the chemistry just wasn't there at all. What they said is on point. Those weren't love scenes, those were absolute sleep aids. I could not feel anything with Betrayal. I know that Stuart Townsend want to kick himself in the butt knowing this.

I admit to being a little surprised with Revenge and Homeland. I thought that they would geta higher reception to their premiere showing.. oh well..I guess god didn't like ugly. Shonda and Kerry was cheated from their Emmys. Maybe they'll get it next year.

    1. Jeff Perry was cheated at the Emmys too. How the hell is this man not drowning in awards for his portrayal of Cyrus Beene????

    2. Wow! I missed that part. I mean that man is a great actor. You can feel his frustration when he gets frustrated about a situation on Scandal. This reminds me of that time When Steven Spielberg and Whoopi Goldberg lost their Oscar with The Color Purple.

  3. The season premiere of Scandal was free for download on iTunes along with the series premiere of Betrayal (they packaged them together).

AFTER WATCHING BETRAYAL.......I WANTED MY MONEY BACK.

I don't care if it was a free download.

    1. Betrayal was definitely a joke. This serirs was a waste of money and time . I can't believe (being sarcastic) that they let this be shown on TV like that.

  4. *Season premiere of Revenge, not Scandal.

But speaking of Revenge, interesting how once they whitewash away the diversity, the ratings take a dump.

    Mmmmmmmhmmmmmmmm.

    1. What diversity? You barely saw Cary or Ashley except for a few minutes here and there. I enjoyed the show when it first came out, but wondered how they would keep it going over the long run. I guess that is why the added in the conspiracy part, but now its just boring.

    2. I'm also including Nolan who repped us queer males also.......even though I feel ambivalent about said portrayal.

  5. You'd think with Shonda Rhimes' success with her shows especially " Scandal" that networks would not just go for diversity in tv shows but also in tv show WRITERS and CREATORS.
