Tsk, Tsk

Fine. I give.
The way Joel Ward responded to the racist tweets that would have staggered a lesser man was beautiful.

A hero for less than an hour, Ward, the Washington Capital who on Wednesday defeated the Boston Bruins with his Game 7 goal in overtime, was shown the tweets by a teammate. The messages revealed just how heroes are thought of when (1) you eliminate a high-profile team and (2) you're black.

Yes, hockey's racial makeup had a little something to do with the "That n----- deserves to hang"-laced tweets sent out following the Capitals' victory, as did the fact that the "crime" Ward committed was against a city with such a racially polarized history as Boston's. As bad as this sounds, that comes with the territory.

See, the tweets aren't the issue -- those things are going to happen. They are a part of sports; they are a part of society. And they are a part of how society works when fans feel the need to -- and have the unfiltered resources, outlets and tools (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, Skype, blogs, etc.) to -- react to incidents that hit them in places they are rarely hit ... by someone they are not used to being hit by.

Tiger Woods hit society. Venus and Serena Williams hit society. Tim Tebow hit society. Jeremy Lin hit society.

Joel Ward, welcome to the world. His welcome is a reminder of how we (sports fans, media, athletes, execs, etc.) can never get too comfortable with the belief that sports has a different set of rules when it comes to race than the rest of society. Maybe on the field it does, but off the field, there will always be a reminder of the roles race and racism play in society's relationship with sports.

~ Scoop Jackson, "Is Sports a Mirror or a Window?"

Is it just hockey that hasn’t joined the 21st century, because judging by these tweets it sure seems that way. I mean this is just crazy to me. This is exactly what’s wrong with the kids who have grown up in the online and Twitter generation. They have no problem typing something on the internet or Twitter, that in person they would never say. Do you really think that if given the chance any of these gutless, classless children would actually say any of these things to Joel Ward? Maybe a couple, but a majority would probably ask for his autograph. Nothing but a bunch of bitches. People need to start realizing that they can be held accountable for things that they post or type. Bunch of internet tough made at the fact that they aren’t playing in the NHL. Grow up.

Okay, so Boston sucks. But if you think of Florida, Georgia, and Arizona, that pretty much seems to be the theme across these disunited states.

Call me cray, but does anybody else look at this story and - for some weird reason - think of Chris Rock's very first comedy special?

You know what I wish the 21st century joins the 21st century. This racism isn't happening in a fucking vacuum and too many mofos act like this shit is just some isolated incident in an otherwise post-racial society.

Alladis! People keep expecting things to change, without recognizing the problems and working to solve them first. We'll be having these issues in 3067, if people continue to play ignorant.

As a matter of fact it was the First thing I thought of. At present, hockey is considered by many to be one of the last sacred bastions (barring NASCAR) of white dominance; so naturally the white man feels threatened by non-white encroachment. Subsequently, the more threatened he feels, the more racist he becomes. As Chris said, "we dominate all physical sports; moreover, "once they make a heated hockey rink, we're takin' that sh*t, too"

It’s no coincidence that people making these tweets view themselves as average Americans. With 74% of the population being comprised of whites it’s not unreasonable to presume that even your most average American is a flaming racist. Xenophobia is native to a westernized group-think mentality; therefore whites are not the individuals they make themselves out to be. What we’ve observed is a clear pattern of bigotry; part of a self-affirming delusion that presupposes every racist rant to be an isolated incident. Challenge this notion and one draws to the surface a most vile issue of racist brine; aged to potency through centuries of denial.

This country has a great deal to account for and their head in the sand while shooting a gun approach just isn't working for the global MAJORITY who have the strange moniker of "minority". I want to know exactly how they feel. Because it let's me know that arming myself isn't so ludicrous an idea after all. These are bloodhounds and "darkie" blood is their aphrodisiac. 1. Yep, there is even a book about the contributions of Black hockey players. http://www.blackicebook.com/blackice/index.cfm?fuseaction=book.welcome (Black Ice). Black men created the signature moves of the time and hockey (at least in Canada) can be traced back to indigenous people of North America. Never heard of Joel before today but he should keep being amazing.

  6. From South Park: Pee
Cartman; “There are actually more minorities here than us!”
Kyle: “Well, then they’re not minorities, are they?”
    Cartman: “What do you mean?”
Kyle:”Dumb-ass! If there’s 60 percent of them to 40 percent of us then who is the minority?”
Cartman: “The black and brown people.”
    Kyle: “No! You’re the minority!”
Cartman: “Do I look like a minority to you, stupid?!”

This is how Minority has come to be interpreted lately. Sadly, it has very little to do with math and everything to do with race. There are millions of such Cartman's in our country today.

To use a few lines from the Matrix:
The Matrix (Racism) is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters; (People of privilege). The very minds of the people we are trying to save (Educate). But until we do, these (White) people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged (Give up their privilege). And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system (White dominion) that they will fight to protect it. (Pull out the confederate flag and cry havoc).

Bloody hell. Obi Aduba is of the most popular players in Melbourne's(Oz) pro ice hockey team. He's an African-American man from Massachusetts. There are also other POC players (mainly of Asian descent).

I sometimes wonder if the very small crowds at Aussie pro ice hockey matches make racist white folks keep their racism quiet in public (if you yell anything, pretty much everyone will hear you).

This bullshit right here is just a reminder of what I already knew: Being unaware of racist bullshit being tossed at POC with a public profile doesn't mean it's not there, or that it won't spike in volume at a moment's notice. White folks will still manage to be "shocked" at the "isolated incidents" that "never happen", though. They're dependable like that!

  8. Seriously, this is par for the course. Anytime we show that we can do something BETTER than them, they resort to racial epithets.

This is a big problem in the soccer world, where Black players get verbally abused by fans. It happened to the Williams sisters (who people regularly put down in a myriad of ways, and where they love to worship the "beautiful" blond Russian players, regardless of talent), it happened to Tiger Woods (remember Fuzzy Zoeller, plus there were courses that refused to let him play when he was still an amateur playing in high school, while he was wrong, let's not pretend that a lot of his recent troubles were not so much that he cheated, but that he cheated on a blond white woman that they felt he should have been grateful to have).

This comes down to the rage that so many of the have that while they still control almost everything, it doesn't take much more than a chance for some of us to beat them.

It happens when a pretty black lady shows up on TV and white female fans white hate male about her since her presence shows up their white lady hero.

And of course it has been happening to the Obamas since they moved into the White House.

And it always gets excused or ignored, and people do it without consequence.

It gets really hard to deal with any of them b/c you know all of this is simmering beneath the surface.

  9. Considering how the Vancouver riots last year was spawned by a hockey game, it doesn't surprise me in the least that the dark beast of whiteness is unleashed.

Funny thing though, white people always complain about how black people are lazy and won't do shit, but when we do, that's then the anger and jealousy rears its ugly head.

I agree; anger provides the perfect opportunity to rally whites politically. Unsurprisingly, when such conditions arise they consolidate their numbers to protect their interests. What some white people long for are the kowtow days of Booker T Washington. The days when blacks/immigrants could be successful in almost any endeavor; provided said endeavors weren’t used as stepping stones to undermine the status quo. Some whites don’t mind if non-whites are prosperous, as long as our prosperity isn’t at their expense.

Let the minorities pan their wares in the urban districts or in enterprises that cater exclusively to their kind. Hell we’ll do business with them yes (after all money is green). Except, we’ll utilize unethical business practices; deny them loans and stimulus to such an end as to make them dependent upon our good nature. Cheat and undermine them in every way imaginable; because that’s the American way.

What whites fail to appreciate is non-whites excelling in areas where they presume to dominate. One Tiger Woods is fine yes- but ten such players like him? Certain whites would rather extol the virtues of second-rate blonde players, than acknowledge the ascendancy of the Williams sisters. Furthermore, there was a time when the world heavyweight title was beyond the reach of men like Jack Johnson, or "Denver" Ed Martin. Moreover, just as the Heavyweight Title epitomized the embodiment of white masculinity (and to a larger extent white supremacy) so did the office of the President of these United States. For many whites the Presidency is the ultimate manifestation of white political and socioeconomic power. “And now look at em,” whites lament; “they took that too.”

We're going to see a lot more of this non-white intrusion into all-white spaces; just as it was done to us. "For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

    My people,
just wait...there's more to come. With Obama's impending win in November, white rage will explode into dizzying heights. Remember the nice old white lady who offered you tomatoes from her garden? She will transform into a savage beast, foaming at the mouth. The nice gentile co-worker who always brings donuts? She'll spew vomitus from her belly.

Blacks, given any opportunity, will live up to the most challenging expectations for one reason: It's how we do.

  13. Here's what get's the eyeroll from me.

The Boston Bruins released a statement about how they condemn the "ignorant" and "classless" remarks about Joel Ward. Okay...so far, so good. But then they went on to play the distance game, saying these fans aren't representative of their team or their city.

    *eye roll* Um...yeah right.

These are your people. They are your fans and your fellow Bostonians. Their cash funds your careers. Their support makes you famous. Face it, Bruins; racist money is rapidly becoming the Other blood money. These are the people buying your beers in congratulations, teaching your kids in school, preaching in your churches, and coming onto your teammates. They'll be back next year, cheering from the stands and chanting your names, smiling happily down at you. They're your fans. They're you.

Yet in their denial; in their heart of hearts they reason: "These Bostonians look- act, walk and talk like me; so they can't be racist! Some of us hail from the same neighborhoods; we came up together. I won't accept it. Nay... I can't believe it! These are good people. (Reminds me of a line from High Plains Drifter) "This is a God fearing town. These are God fearing people." These people can’t be any more racist than I am. That's not who we are.

Eventually, denial turns into indignation. "We Bostonians have a right to proud; if that means we're racist then so be it!"

North Carolina Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment 1 Reportedly Written To Protect 'Caucasian Race'

"According to the alternative Yes! Weekly, writer and campaigner Chad Nance spoke to a pollworker who told him that Jodie Brunstetter said, "The reason my husband wrote Amendment 1 was because the Caucasian race is diminishing and we need to uh, reproduce."

Yeah its starting...they're not even trying to hide it anymore. Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess. Why any non-white person would continue to vote Republican is beyond me and mine.

    The article continues:
"I'm afraid they have made it a racial issue when it is not," Brunstetter said of the poll workers. Pressed on whether she had used the word "Caucasian," she said, "I probably said the word," but that she hadn't used it in a race-related manner.

Because you see, its never about race.
