So I'm rewatching Nikita, right.....

And there's a kind of fail going on on this show which makes me wonder whether or not I should root for its very possible cancellation.

First of all, there's Nikita.  And no, you're not hallucinating.

The leading woman on this CW show really is a woman of color, chosen because of her ability to fight and do her own stunts.  I'm actually quite the Maggie Q fan, so I was glad to see her land such a role.

At the beginning of the series, Nikita is a one-woman army.  A rogue assassin, she's targeting a corrupt covert American institution which fakes the executions and suicides of criminals so as to create "deniable assets."  These assets are then trained to be killers.  If they refuse, they're "canceled", which is the show's polite way of saying they're immediately killed.

After all, everyone already thinks they're dead, and no one ever comes to their funerals.

Nikita is the first agent to ever break free and go rogue, and it's a delight to see this brilliant, fearless warrior woman in action, outwitting and out-fighting nearly everyone around her - and doing it solo for the most part.  But then...the agent who trained her (Michael) and with whom she was involved, also goes rogue, and suddenly she becomes this romantically needy, always-talking-about-her-beau, crying-when-he's gone Carrie Bradshaw and it's downright appalling.  Suddenly she needs a bunch of men to help her do her job, and it leaves me wondering WTF???

Next, there's Amanda.  I love Amanda.

You can't go wrong with actress Melinda Clarke.  I enjoy her in whatever she's in - Nikita, Firefly, Star Trek: ENT, Xena.  Her role of Amanda couldn't have gone to a better actress.

"Division", the covert agency, is initially run by a man named Percy.  Amanda stands at his right hand.  She teaches the unwilling recruits how to sound eloquent instead of like druggies; she teaches them to walk and dress like blue bloods.  She also acts as psychiatrist and "Inquisitor" whenever interrogation is necessary.  By the end of the first season, she takes Percy's job, and has him imprisoned in a cage below Division.  At the beginning of the second season, she reminds him that he's only alive for one reason, and if it weren't for that reason he'd "be dissolved today" (and cocks her head to the side for emphasis).

Amanda is cold, calculating, and delightfully vicious...in the first season.

In the second season, she's suddenly another needy woman.  She insists out of nowhere that she and Percy "had something."  When he tells her there was nothing but business between them because she's incapable of love, she looks visibly heartbroken.  She also goes from possessing an almost Vulcan professionalism to becoming increasingly emotional and impatient.

Um...WTF???

Then there's Sonya.  *rubs temples*

Little is known about lovely actress Lyndie Greenwood and little will ever be known about her if she stays on this show.

Where Jaden was an angry loudmouth who started fights for no reason, "Sonya" is British, meek, docile, constantly bossed around by Amanda, and has maybe a line here and there every few episodes.  She makes me miss Jaden with a vengeance; Jaden was a tough chick filled with ambition and the refusal to be ignored.  Sonya seems to just want to keep her head down and avoid being canceled.

Now, I really want to commend actress Lyndsey Fonseca on landing and playing Alexandra Udinov to perfection.  This character more than makes up for the fail from her role in Kick-Ass.

The character of Alex has survived the assassination of her father in Russia, being sold into sex slavery, and being strung on drugs for years.  After escaping the brothels, she reinvented herself as an American, changing her accent and buying forged papers.  But she was still a druggie, and it took a lot of help from Nikita to stay clean.

In season one, Alex was Nikita's mole in Division, which she (and the writers) handled quite well.  Possibly due to her life in the brothels, Alex isn't eager to get booed up, and her main driving force is getting revenge for her family (her father was a billionaire and she's his legal heir).  So whenever we see Alex with a man - which is  really rare - it doesn't last.  And while the rest of the characters are starting to irritate me, I'm having trouble finding fault with hers.  Unlike Amanda and Nikita, Alex is focused.

Veteran actress Erica Gimpel has joined the class as Carla, a woman who ran a halfway house where Nikita wound up during her druggie teen days.  Turns out, Carla was on the run from Division back in the day because of Amanda.  Irony of ironies, Carla created Division.  In an attempt to rehabilitate people on death row, she learned how to fake their executions so she could transfer them and have more time helping them fix their lives.

Carla has been homeless and on the run for so long (she's the highest person on Amanda's personal hit list) that she seems to be a few french fries short of a happy meal.  All she can think about is rejoining Percy and making Division back into what "it was meant to be" - whatever the hell that is.  I mean, if Percy's involved, it ain't good.

So...is anyone else at the bar watching Nikita?  What are your thoughts on the women so far?  Anyone else missing Jaden?

*sigh*  There'll never be another quite like her.
Anything else on the show bugging you?

  1. Personally I’m not in the “Cancellation” territory but you do raise some valid concerns and I noticed some of this while watching the show.

Thoughts, because you know I have them:

I was really looking forward to this season and for the most part I’ve enjoyed it. Everyone’s got their own agenda but more than that, the ladies have taken center stage. Amanda is running Division, Alex is coming into her own, the Senator is the last one standing in regards to Oversight and Nikita has a light at the end of the tunnel with her crusade.

But I’m with you on there being huge glaring areas of opportunity.

Nikita- Her character has even pretty consistent, even the “she has a big heart and will fight and love passionately for the people she loves” ish. That being said, I’ve been over the whole Nikita/Michael ship. With those two, I just don’t care. I don’t even have any animosity or opposition towards the pairing, I just don’t care and when they constantly try to amp up the drama between them, I care even less. I think the only reason I can tolerate Nikita’s crying because she still gets the job done and because Michael whines more than anyone and has more baggage than an airport. They’re not as bad as say Sidney and Michael from Alias but I’m going to need them to lay off the bad romance. If I wanted that shit I’d be watching Vampire Diaries.

Amanda- It seems to me that they’re just trying to force a flaw on her and that’s the best they can do. Ice woman is too powerful. Obviously it’s because she needs TLC and a side of cock. I don’t know if you watched the original series that used to come on the USA networks that starred Peta Wilson but the actress who’s playing the Senator on the show was Madeline (their version of Amanda) on the original series. That actress redefined the term BOSS CHICK. And while she and Operations (their version of Percy) had a twisted sexual relationship/partnership, she never lost her edge and was a soldier the whole time. When I first heard Nikita was coming to CW, I was stoked that a WOC would be getting the titular role and my first question after that was, “WHO’S PLAYING MADELINE/AMANDA?” Because the actress who played the Senator was an impossible act to follow. But when I found out Melinda Clarke got the role, I geeked out because I knew it would take a boss chick to play a boss chick and to succeed a boss chick. I get that Nikita might be paying homage to Operations and Madeline’s relationship with that whole Percy and Amanda angle. But the real Amanda doesn’t get mad. Chick gets even. After she gets pissed off, she should just shut down and go into killer mode. This whole, she has to latch on to a man in order to succeed bullshit.......no........just no.

Sonya- I get it. She’s the anti-Jaden. I’ll reserve judgment until I see if and when they do something with her character. IF they do something with her character.

Alex- I’m still on the fence about her. On the one hand she’s coming into her own which is cool but it’s like she still has to lean on everyone else. She might be Daddy’s little girl but she’s got mommy issues like crazy: Nikita, Amanda, her actual mommy. But I suppose I should be happy, the way they write the show and prop her up, you’d think the title of the show was Alex and not Nikita.

    cont....

I don't know which dickless network exec got all intimidated by this character, but he/they need to go fuck themselves. You don't tamper with perfection and Amanda's characterization was perfection.

      They won't.

These two should've stayed enemies. Nikita should've hooked up with Owen, if anyone. Two damaged assassins gone rogue = endless possibilities.

Besides, Maggie Q & Devon Sawa have actual chemistry. Maggie Q and Shane West don't.

    3. Exactly!!!! This is one of the only times where I can honestly say that an interracial couple on tv has "no chemistry."

Owen and Maggie are very believable or for that matter she and Ryan (CIA boy) actually had some spark too.

Michael and Nikita seem too forced and that might be why the producers are amping up the tears and the drama to sell it but it's not working.

    5. Am I the only one who was actually wishing for a lesbian romance....Nikita could quit the dick. I was actually rooting for Nikita x Alex Call me crazy but I kinda wish that could have happened...buuuuuut that was NEVER gonna happen.

I don't mind Mikita I just wish they'd stop with the dramatics ...the stfu already ...just have some really hot angry bondage like sex PLEASE enough with the fucking crying. I don't mind the pairing with Owen or Ryan either. I was really cool with either three ...buuuuut I was hoping for Nikita x Alex. Idk I just want to see something like that happen for ONCE.

    6. Nikita/Alex was very mother/daughter. But Nikita was apparently the only assassin Amanda ever really cared about, so that combo would've been nice.

    7. Yea...Idk I just wanted the lesbian couple...least one of those. It'd have been good.

  2. Carla- I liked the fact that she’s brought in to be the anti-Amanda. I even like the fact that you see parallels with the motherly relationships: Carla/Nikita (nice that it’s two WOC), Nikita/Alex, Amanda/Alex. I like seeing the dynamics play out.

But a lot of her storyline has been too forced. I have a hard time believing that she’s that naive. If she and Percy were an actual couple and she thought Amanda stole him away and that shit blinded her, I might could buy the whole she thinks Percy is good and Amanda is evil, maybe. Maybe. But as it stands now. And really, Amanda being in bed with Gogle, of all the shockers on that show, that wasn’t really the biggest secret. Really hoping they do something more with Carla.

I will say this much for Nikita, for all the fails, the show has shown a diverse range (albeit limited failed roles) of black women: Emily, Jaden, Sonya, Carla.

Speaking of Jaden, I still say they should’ve kept her alive, maybe made her a cleaner (she would’ve been perfect for it) and continue the rivalry with Alex. Missed opportunity.

I’m gonna need Percy to stop wearing that fedora and looking like a boss. His swagger is killing me.

And Ari Tasarof, (Gogle Guy), I would gladly tap that fine ass any day of the week.

Don't forget Dana Winters, the only female Guardian.

  3. THis isn't terribly related, but I thought that you ought to know that that that particular trope page has been purged. I'm hoping that they at least bring back a retooled version and address the eurocentric beauty standard.

  5. They need to give Nikita her balls back. And if they cut this show I will have to go ape shit on them ...I love Nikita and I love Maggie Q for more than one thing, not only is she gorgeous and SMART she's fucking dangerous she can kick ass. And as a martial artist I look up to that.

But really, give her back her balls and let her rip Division a new asshole. I love Nikita I bought the first season because I liked it so much. And I miss Jaden she was good...I honestly wish Alex and Her could have become friends and sliced bitches apart (i.e Division and whomever else fucked with either of them). Alex I love too. I can't really complain about any of the female characters they all started out strong, Amanda is a fucking bitch though I love her because she is so believably cruel and horrible.

I want the ass kicking highly smart women back come on....Please Give us the real Nikita back.

  6. I refuse to watch the CW (Channel White) so my exposure to this show is limited. But, what I have seen, is often the eps that involved Jaden. Sigh...Jaden. They don't want us to have nice things, don't they?

    1. They really don't. I think of all the potential lost on the character and it makes me ill. Whoever wrote Amanda needed to have written for Jaden as well.

  7. Oh dear Lord...and here I was looking forward to Netflixing season 2. Won't even bother with it now. Amanda was THE BEST CHARACTER on the show: ice fucking cold while looking flawless.

I deliberately refused to buy a ticket on the Nikita/Michael ship because it doesn't look seaworthy. And now she's emo over that guy? WTF?

No point in watching, as they've ruined the characters I cared about.

    1. They really have. I get the feeling they're going to overthrow Amanda in this season anyway, which would remove the last remaining reason to watch.

  8. Nikita is the only reason I miss cable.

I can't do it with human characters, but... I used to watch that ish every week because it was the only thing worth seeing on TV!

Sorry to hear all this, I saw the first season and fell in love.

    known, but not famous
    good looking and believable
    Newcomers WITH budding talent.

    sigh......thanks Ankhensen Mie.

I knew CW would wreck it sooner or later, which is why I stayed away. They can't seem to do drama without a heaping helping of emosauce, especially for their female characters.

    1. Here's what gets me: season 1 was perfect, which is not something I say easily about a CW show. If ain't broke...why shatter it into a million pieces and flush it down the toilet?

      Delete
    2. Too many women watch it. The CW doesn't understand the mysterious feminine mind or how to market to it. So they want to trade their feminine audience for a male one.

Its why they canceled Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
