POC of the Vampire Diaries: Carter & Nurse Haynes

~ Special Edition ~

BJ Britt as "Carter"
Previously

This post has been a loooooooooong time coming.  Carter and Nurse Haynes are from the beginning of season 2.  If we thought Sheila Bennett was a hint at the POC body count to come, these two confirmed that suspicion with a vengeance.

Terri James as Nurse Haynes
This was the episode which initially earned Caroline a lot of ire from fans of color, including me.  This was episode where she woke up a vampire and started feeding, without full knowledge of what was happening to her or why.  For some reason, she only seemed to go after dark meat in this episode.

I mean, she attacks Nurse Haynes in the hospital, but doesn't kill her.  Caroline's semi-remorseful about the action; she apologizes repeatedly, bandages the bite wound, and then compels the nurse to remember things differently ("My husband likes to get kinky").

Carter, the guy who works at the carnival (and openly voices attraction to Bonnie), however, has no such luck...which brings us to the dead Negro portion of the evening.

First, when the vampire Damon develops a suspicion about the Lockwoods might be a family of werewolves, he compels Carter to pick a fight with Tyler to confirm that suspicion.

The vampire Stefan disapproves but doesn't stop his brother; he watches the fight Carter picks from a distance, and only after Carter's knocked down does he have the nerve to come over and ask if Carter's okay.

Seriously?
Later, while Carter is tending his wounds and wondering why the hell he's having such a shitty day, the smell of his blood draws in a hungry Caroline who, for a reason never explained, suddenly lacks the self-restraint she had earlier that day with Nurse Haynes.

RIP Carter
Only Bonnie mourns Carter; she cries over his dead body while everyone is focused on calming down and caring for Caroline.  It's ironic when you think about it; Caroline starts out this way and then dramatically evolves into a devout protector of innocents.  Meanwhile, everyone else is still a selfish waste of space (excluding Bonnie, of course, though my patience with her characterization is already worn thin).

  2. Well, I guess this entire blog series proves that there was no point in me watching the Vampire Diaries, then. -dodged a bullet-

    1. There really isn't. I've already taken that one for the team.

  3. And I thank you for it; not that I would have watched anyway. This just proves it's not worth the time.

  4. All I'm going to say is this. WHATEVER you do, don't ever watch Gossip Girl. You think this shit is bad, GG will have you apologizing to TVD with the quickness. I'm not exaggerating.

O_O I've only watched enough of that show (and in haphazard succession) to remember Blair's Asian and Black mostly-silent minions. You mean it's gotten worse than that?

Also, Ankh? What's the ratio of dead POC characters to dead white characters on TVD thus far?

      Ewwwwwwwww.

      @ Leo Princess

There are plenty of dead white people, but there are plenty of living white people to balance them out. Not the same with POC.

Ah. I forgot. Coloured folks don't replicate. Gotcha.

    4. @Neo I refuse to acknowledge such a thing is possible.

  5. And she kills another Black man a police officer I think she feeds on him and uses him as a shield from bullets.

*looks up The Carrie Diaries, mutters a curse, makes the sign of the Cross*

I know it's rough for actress of colour, but....*sigh*. The snide side of me is wondering how CW managed to grab this over ABC Family, since the latter seemed to have the HarperCollins adapted series game locked.

    2. That's pretty much what I did, except I twitched at the word "Diaries" first.

    3. Ladies I pounded my armrest and said No over and over again for about ten minutes. My roommate had to come see what was wrong. Seriously Freema and any other POC actor deserves better.

    4. I really love her on Law and Order UK so if she's leaving I'm sad.

  8. Good thing, I never watched this show ...EVER! one can only take so much character butchery. Speaking of which, Ankh, I'm curious to know when you're going to discuss the character epic butchery that is Tara Thornton on True Blood. I'm real close to cutting this show loose if they don't redeem themselves in season 5.

    1. I'm having trouble watching that show. I already hate Sookie and her brother. I think Sookie's love interest what's-his-face is hideous and boring. I hate the generic accent everyone tries to do on the show. And Lord knows that while Tara Thornton truly is a thing of beauty, I'm not sure how much I can stomach on TB. TVD really wore me out.

  9. And is it me was Carter fine as hell. So was the nurse too but Carter...damn!!!!
