$10,000, Victim-Blaming, and the Negroes George Knows

Real talk:
"It's just starting to sink in" to Zimmerman how big the controversy over the shooting has become, Oliver said. "Up until this point, because he was there and he knows what happened ... he has been very confident -- naively -- that this would all blow over."

...The lawyer, Craig Sonner, has said that Zimmerman had a history of mentoring young blacks, had friends of all races and shows no indication of being a racist. Sonner also said Zimmerman had no choice but to go into hiding during increasingly angry demands that he be arrested.

The latest demand came from the New Black Panther Party, which on Saturday offered a $10,000 reward for Zimmerman's capture. "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth," New Black Panther leader Mikhail Muhammad said when asked whether the offer could incite violence, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

..."Is George a racist? The answer is no, absolutely not," Sonner told the Associated Press. He said Zimmerman's friends "only have good things to say about him" but that many were afraid to come forward because they feared being targeted for supporting Zimmerman.

That did not deter Oliver, who said he understood why Zimmerman was fearful. "Wouldn't you be?" he said. "There's someone ... who put a $10,000 bounty on his head."

- LA Times, "Trayvon Martin case: Shooter may have expected it to 'blow over'"
Lawd. *rubs temples*

White Amerikkka, here's some advice from a humble pygmy: stop playing the racist card.  For the record, the Racist Card is where you take something like, say, the murder of an unarmed child, and make it all about whether or not his killer is a white racist.  Um...that's not what this is about.  Whether George has a Latina mother or not is irrelevant.  Whether George has a bunch of conveniently countable Negroes in his life or not is irrelevant.  George Zimmerman murdered an innocent person, then expected it all to just "blow over", and that's what this is about.  By the way, let that be a testament to how deep his whiteness goes; he killed a black child and expected it all to just "blow over".  Real talk, y'all.

As for the all countable Negroes who would trust ole George with their lives, uh, their kid wasn't shot.  If it had been one of their kids instead of Trayvon - and could very well have been - they'd be singing a different tune.  That's one of those things which just sort of goes without saying.

Now...let me talk about this $10,000*, 'cause let's be real - it's one of the main reasons why I'm writing this post.

In order to fully understand the Ten Grand Situation, I need to tell you a story.  Once upon a time when I was in college, my friend "John" hosted a keg party and borrowed a friend's tap.  Well, some other dude - "Bill" - spirited the tap away after the party, and John's friend started getting impatient about his tap.  So John and I are talking, and he's ranting about Bill not answering his calls.  John ends the rant with, "...So yeah, K, I'm sick of this shit.  That's why I put a $25 price on his head."

Moi:  *blink*

Now, before you start asking me a bunch questions along the lines of "WTF????" (and I've been there), understand that this was back in Appalachia.  White folks tend to operate a bit differently up there.  See, the point of my story is that within, like, 48 hours of issuing the $25 bounty, John got the keg tap back.

Read it like you need to, but that's my thought on the Ten Grand Situation.  *nods*

Now onto the predictable victim-blaming.  It doesn't matter if Trayvon smoked weed.  It doesn't matter if he was wearing a hoodie.  He hadn't done anything to George, and he hadn't done anything to that neighborhood.  He hadn't done anything to warrant being murdered.  Talking smack about a murdered child is about as low as anyone can go.  Everyone's singing the whole "two sides to every story" song, but since the dead can't defend themselves, George doesn't get to be automatically believed over the child he murdered.

That's the thing about murder, bar patrons; it's a fuck-up you can't un-fuck.

So I'm going to end this now with an excellent quote from Field Negro.  I've often wondered about the troll infestations on blogs like his and Abagond's (and Womanist Musings), and though I had a theory as to why great blogs like those trolls, I never had it confirmed quite like this.

I have to admit, the way Field breaks it down is just so ...well, sexy.
"Damn field! Why do you allow all those racist trolls to comment on your site?" I get that a lot. And my answer is always the same: Get used to it. Those trolls could be your neighbor, your co-worker, or even the person you sit next to in church.

The thing about the Internet is that allows folks who couldn't always do it to hide behind an anonymous label and call you all kinds of vile things. He or she can do it from the safety of their trailer park or the Wal- Mart bathroom, and they can send it out to thousands of people reading every day with one push of a button....
*fans self*

POC in Amerikkka, above all, remember this: the racists who brazenly blow off deaths of POC or who infest all your favorite fandoms are sometimes the same people smiling at you at work, hugging you in school, or even making out with you at the bar.  Never forget that.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Allow me to clarify what I meant about the Ten Grand Situation: it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever head.  Ain't shit gonna happen with that $10K - ain't...shit.  To quote my coworker from this morning, "The hardest part for me would be when it came time to collect.  'Cause you know them...they check might bounce."
  1. The hoodie is just a convenient target for this one situation.
    If he'd been wearing a backwards baseball cap or his pants slung low, you know that'd be the "reason" he was "dangerous" and deserved to get shot. They ain't looking for reasons - because the reason is racism - they just want something else to divert attention away from the real issue.
    If it isn't one thing - it'll be another. But the one fact that wouldn't change is that if he weren't black, he wouldn't have been murdered.
    Did anybody hear his Black friend? He came out trying to defend George's "honor"(ugh). As my mom would tell me if you say something really stupid don't let anybody know what you said it. In this case with Joe, I wouldn't let the universe know that I'm that stupid. Do he really believe that " C--n" isn't a racial slur? Either he's being paid to tell that load of crap or he don't know who he is. On top of that, he said that he wasn't there at the shooting of Trayvon and that he only went by what George told him.. oops! so much for being a great witness.
    This story also blends well about closet racists. If Joe is a friend of his it's sad. Do Zimmerman really think that a intelligent Black person would knowingly want to be friends with a racist? I wouldn't.Unless Joe is really that desperate to be friends with George, he is delusional to the utmost. I'm hoping that Joe didn't know who his friend is,but it's safe to say that he do. Any POC who is willing to dismantle C--n" as a racist slur and make a fool out of themselves defending a racist is beyond me. I disown people like that.
    Joe should also read this. Apparently some people really don't get the true meaning of what friendship really is.I can know people for years,but it doesn't mean that I like them. I was thinking about the incident that took place with Abner Louima. One of the accused NYPD officers, Justin Volpe was a racist, yet he had a Black fiancee( and for his record, the woman was very upset about Justin doing that) and there was another incident where this White guy was robbing a band and pretended that he was a Black robber donning a mask of a Black man. His girlfriend was also Black and beyond upset with him.
    Like I said, I'm soooo freakin glad that you brought this up. I'm sick of those racist detractors using the " I'm not racist, my friend is Black" mantra. When will they ever learn? It is as old and lame as your child telling you that the dog ate their homework. What does Black on Black crime have to with with George's case? Absolutely nothing. They can talk about, Trayvon, my parents, the president, my neighbors all they want,but as we all know, it has nothing to with the evil deed that George pulled on Trayvon.Those marchers aren't going anywhere any time soon.He as well get over that.
    In his own right,George Zimmerman is also downright funny. This idiot will not give up will he? He's really that desperate to get out of this mess. I was reading about his lawyer opting out of an interview That is even crazier..coward! then again, a part of me say that he really don't want to be on George's case and is trying to build up a weak defense to get out of it. He knows that what he did was wrong and has a list of 1,000,0001 excuses why he shouldn't be in the position that he's in. Enough said. He should do the world a favor: shut up. He took Trayvon out of this world,he should be man enough to face what he did.
    4. I read a good article explaining why whites and conservatives were so quiet at first.
      "It seemed the Martin story simply did not fit the right-wing's preferred narrative about guns and minorities and how white America is allegedly under physical assault from Obama's violent African-American base. Or, as Rush Limbaugh famously put it, '[I]n Obama's America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering.'
      The conservative media have spent the last three years utterly obsessed
       with the topic of race in America, but only when they can frame that issue dishonestly; only when conservatives can use news events for race baiting purposes. So as the Martin story morphed into a national conversation about race and guns and the law, many conservative media voices remained silent early on. (A silence later replaced by attempts to smear the young victim.)"
      The whole article is here: http://mediamatters.org/mobile/blog/201203270002.
      It talks about some of the right wings smears, including the picture that they've tried to pass off as Trayvon to garner sympathy for Zimmerman. I can't remember the last time of seen whites look so desperate and pathetic. Their heads are about ready to explode now that it's sinking in that Trayvon wasn't some kind of thug.
    Then for all we know Trevyon didn't actually reach for the gun. He could have been putting his hand out like "Wait man, calm down." We just don't know.
  14. At what point did Trayvon Martin lose the right to defend himself against an unknown assailant? Now let me get this straight: You (Zimmerman) follow a young man you deem suspicious through a darkened neighborhood. You have no authority or authorization from law enforcement to take such action, but still you persist. You confront this unknown person in the role of ‘Aggressor’. Only when you realize that the tide has changed in your opponent’s favor do you invoke the Stand Your Ground defense. Now if the law is specific in its intent that only White/Hispanic males have legal rights under this law than Zimmerman should go free.
    But if confronted by an unknown man in a dark neighborhood I would instruct my 25 year-old son to run for his life and seek help. If in your attempt to flee, you are pounced upon by your pursuer, (who still has not identified himself as an agent of law enforcement) then you should vigorously fight for your life. Even if it results in the demise of your attacker; Fight for your life!”
    I also think that a team of scientists need to study Zimmerman's DNA. His healing factor is superb! How do you get into a fight for your life with an attacker, sustain a broken nose and a gash to the back of your head requiring stitches, yet have it all healed up by the time you're taken into custody for questioning the very same night? Not even a bruise, son? I know precinct cameras aren't highly-sensitive pieces of equipment, but they're usually good enough to pick up facial injuries, especially on paler skin that shows marks a lot better than darker ones.
    I need an explanation for that one, and it had better be good.
    1. Nothing in this case makes sense. If Zimmerman was injured, did the police take photographic evidence? Why was Trayvon tagged a John Doe and why did Tracy Martin have to file a missing persons report before police told him his son was dead even though he was identified the night of the murder?
      Did Trayvon's body show signs of a struggle? Did he have Zimmerman's blood or dna on his fists, since he allegedly broke this guy's nose? Why was Trayvon tested for drugs and not Zimmerman? Why didn't the lead investigator believe not believe Zimmerman's story and why was he removed from the case? Why did police correct or ignore the witnesses?
      And the biggest question to me is why is no one concerned that Zimmerman's past includes beating up on cops and his ex girlfriend and yet he wasn't charged with either, his father happens to be a judge and we're supposed to believe that it has nothing to do with the case at present.
      I'm no homicide investigator but I like to think I have a bit of common sense and if I believe this is looking like a cover up, I think it's well within reason.
      Delete
    2. Oh so the police lied for him, did they? Awww and they thought there would be no way to verify the truth, or that no one would look into their bullshit self defense cover up? Supported by the cops and one, obviously lying, witness? Silly, racists. There are silent witnesses such as video cameras, cell phone cameras that don't lie. They only show what happened.
      I remember a case a while back where an entire PoC family having a harmless party inside their house, were taken into custody and viciously and beaten for no reason. The cops defense when the city was sued was that they were "taking rocks and bottles", they classic "but they started it defense".
      One member of the jury said,"They kept saying they they were getting rocks and bottle thrown at them, well I looked at that tape of the people being arrested and I didn't see any rocks and bottles on that lawn" The man simply used his god given common sense and justice prevailed. People in uniform lie because they know that no one will question their lies. Those police lied for Zimmerman because his father worked in law enforcement.
      Zimmerman was sooo hurt, but he didn't need to go to the hospital or receive medical attention?
      "How do you get into a fight for your life with an attacker, sustain a broken nose and a gash to the back of your head requiring stitches, yet have it all healed up by the time you're taken into custody for questioning the very same night? Not even a bruise, son?"
    One thing I wish would be addressed in relation to the deaths of not only Treyvon Martin, but also Rekia Boyd and now Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/06/nyregion/fatal-shooting-of-ex-marine-by-white-plains-police-raises-questions.html?_r=1) is the nature of the police. Too often when these cases of police murder occur, there's a tendency to talk about " a few bad apples" or nonsense like "The police are the 99% too!" In reality, the nature of police ensures that people who are deemed to be liabilities under capitalism are to never be trusted and to always been seen a threat. When you have people like the Sandford, NYC, Chicago and other police departments, what you see are a group of people who through the state have sole legitimacy on violence. Thus, they abuse their power given to them with no consent on the part of the people. After all, who would agree to allow people to implicitly separate themselves from the rest of the population for the sole purpose of "keeping the peace" or "protecting property"?
    tl;dr The police do not exist to protect you and me. They exist to keep this system running and if they have to kill/beat/rape/torture more Black people "accidentally" to do so then so be it. No civilian review board can keep them in check. No court trial will bring an end to their bullshit. The only way to truly end police brutality is to get rid of the police, the legal system, and capitalism itself.
    1. If George gets of on this( which wouldn't be any surprise to me if he did), then god help us all.
      I didn't believe George's story from the start. First with his size.I have a brother who is around George's height and weight. He had subdue a guy, who was around Trayvon's size--and he's bipolar. If you ever had to deal with a person with an episode of the problem, you know that they can get extremely temperamental, violent and out of control. My brother had to deal with him after his much shorter brother could not, until the police/ambulance came to take him to the hospital. My brother was able to get this man down. George claimed that Trayvon jumped and punch him.Couldn't George just have just tame him like my my brother did with the bipolar guy?
      Secondly, where is this broken nose that George was supposed to have? Anybody who had a broken or sprang body part knows how painful that can be. Hmmm. for someone to have that he sure don't express himself in pain very well. Where is the blood? Someone on another blog mentioned that it was on the back of his head. I didn't see it and even if that was the case, why did he wait the next day to go to a hospital? Why did the cop wipe his head--with his hand? Whether you're a cop or in the medical profession, you're going to wear protective gear like gloves. I didn't see any kind of medical cloth or gauze in that cops hand. I hardly think that that cop would want to take his bare hand and wipe his blood off his head without protection. He not only would put himself for any risk of disease,but also will be putting the " injured" George at risk for infection.
      In my heart , I 'm trying to be encouraged about the evidence about this case,but it's understandable why many other may not we have been shafted by too many wrongs by the very people we tell our kids to respect. The evidence seem obvious ,but it isn't over. I could be wrong,but if this case about Trayvon get's prosecuted,I can see this being much bigger than just Tray's death. I smell a corruption rat and after reading Elayna post about the ordeal with her own son, I'm just hoping that those cases get a second look.
  20. Economically speaking, cops are part of the 99%. Socially speaking, however, cops have betrayed the 99%. They murder us and get away with it all the time, regardless of our color or gender. They put the safety and continued dominion of the 1% over that of everyone else.
    Cops are the enemy - end of story.
