The Black Girls Club: Cynthia Addai-Robinson

Previously

The Black Girls Club

Say hello to newest recruit, bar patrons.

Who She Is: Cynthia Addai-Robbinson, the product of BW/WM, with her mother being from Ghana.

Where to Watch Her: Cynthia joins fellow Ghanaian Peter Mensah on Spartacus.  She takes over the role of Naevia, formerly portrayed by Lesley Ann Brandt, a woman of East Indian descent.

Why She's a Recruit: First of all...Negro.  Negro taking over a non-Negro's role.  Not to mention, she's a Negro who's a product of BW/WM, not the other way around.

Second of all, she's one of the better female characters on the show.  The other is fellow WoC Katrina Law.  Naevia is moral, sharply intelligent, resourceful, and strong.

Needless to say, this will not go over well.

Already fans are upset with the changes in casting; Andy Whitfield died (*sniff*) and his role of Spartacus was taken over by Liam McIntyre.  Lesley Ann Brandt took off in pursuit of better roles (smart woman), and fans describe her as being "perfect" for the role.

Third of all, she's going to resume her relationship with fan favorite Crixus, who literally worships the ground she walks on.  So much that Season 3 has Spartacus leading his entire band of rebels into the danger just to get her back.  And everywhere they go, they recite the same lines about the woman they seek: a "rare beauty" who is "dark of skin."

*shakes head*  This will not sit will in the morning.

Fourth of all, Cynthia will be playing Naevia as a free woman, not a slave (Brandt already took that one for the team), so no more waiting on fair-skinned nobles, drawing baths, fetching wine, or massaging her ungrateful mistress's clit.

Need I go on?

If you have any more recommendations for the Club, hit me up at the bar.

  1. "or massaging her ungrateful mistress's clit."

*dead* Man, I can tell that whole scene rubbed you the wrong way. ;)

    1. Being a body slave clearly sucked balls, literally and figuratively.

  2. I'm excited to see where they will go with her character even though I hate her love interest, Crixus.

Interestingly, this is the first time I've ever seen a Black woman and Maori man paired together. I've been hoping for it ever since I laid eyes on Julian Arahanga in "Once Were Warriors."

    1. I know what you mean. *fans self*

However...why didn't they get a Maori man who was less white-washed? Manu Bennett looks like a white dude with a good tan - that's it. And he's not playing a POC either - he's playing a vaunted Gaul.

But anyways...what don't you like about Crixus?

  3. Crixus is just an ass. His only redeeming quality is his relationship with Naevia. He seems a bit better this season, but in S1 he was an arrogant, jealous tool.

    1. Did you watch season 1.5? Very humbling for him.

    2. I watched Gods of The Arena. and he still didn't grow on me. Mostly because of what he did to Ashur(my favorite bad guy!) and tried to do with Gannicus in the arena.

  4. *gazing at naked Crixus*

........I'm sorry what's going on with Naevia this season?

  5. People on IMDb are already insulting Cynthia's looks. And others are mad at Brandt for leaving, one guy called her selfish and egotistical. You're right Ankh there are going to be alot of salty people because of this.

  8. Looks like hindsight is 20/20. Cynthia Addai Robinson's career is now prospering. Lesley Ann Brandt is now regulated to doing grade F-movies and a poorly scripted VH1 television show alongside LisaRaye McCoy and an ex-Destiny's Child member. Meanwhile, Cynthia is playing iconic characters like DC Comics Amanda Waller and the female lead in a History miniseries starring alongside Bill Paxton, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez.

But Lesley Ann's mistake was Cynthia's and Manu Bennett's gain, as it became not only a breakout role for her but 2) Manu formed a close relationship with Cynthia in real life and 3) Crixus and Naevia became a far more dynamic couple. So for that I'm grateful!!
