POC of the Vampire Diaries: Anna and Pearl

I'm going to start with the vampire Pearl.

The writers had me going with Pearl.  When Damon got an attitude with her, she reminded him she was 400 years his senior and called him a "little boy."

She then gouged out his eyes for emphasis.

Pearl was friend to the vampire Katherine for some time; Pearl was also one of the vampires entombed beneath the church and trapped by Emily Bennett's spell.  She was later freed with the help of her daughter, the vampire Anna.

Malese Jow as "Anna"
Pearl and Anna were unlike other vampires; all they wanted was live out their eternal lives and be together.  They weren't villains in the typical sense; they weren't after world domination or increasing their power.  Hell, Pearl just wanted to run an apothecary while Anna wanted to go to high school and date Jeremy Gilbert.

They wanted to mind their own business, not stir up trouble, and unlike other vamps, not drag witches into their mess (nor create a mess to begin with).  In fact, after Bonnie unseals the tomb, Anna doesn't really bother her, nor does Pearl.

Their love and loyalty to each other is very beautiful, very touching.  Anna actually spends 145 years trying to free her mother from the tomb.  This was also fairly okay role for actress Malese Jow, and it was great to see Kelly Hu play something other than a bimbo or a two-dimensional love interest.

And now for the dead Negroes portion of the evening.

Before you raise an eyebrow, understand that when the only Asians on the show - all whopping two of them - are killed off almost back to back, a "Hmm" is in order.  *nods* Thus, the Dead Negro Principle most assuredly applies.

Pearl and Anna are vampires (of color).  The founding families of Mystic Falls are witch-burning vampire-hunters.  *shrug*  It was only a matter of time before the inevitable.

RIP Pearl

RIP Anna

*le damn sigh* Now I'm even more curious as to how my friend puts up with all this just for Bonnie. Sounds like every week is a great test of a POC viewer's patience.

Watching the in-fighting for TVD and Glee fandoms on Tumblr is enough for me to stay far, far, oh so very far away from both series. If I watch tv dramas, it's supposed to provide me with a mental escape, not take a year off my life with all the wtf*ckery.

      It really is.

  2. The scene in season 3 was really nice and it provided excellent closure.

I also find it interesting that Jeremy, the most soulful character on the show, has dated and fallen in love with two women of color.

It's like they took a sundown town and put it on TV with the expectation that PoC should love it. Even power (magical or supernatural), which is oft touted as the great equalizer IRL (e.g. money) isn't enough to save people who aren't white on this show.

    I'm glad I didn't bother.

I'm sorry you're taking this one for the team, Ank.

      Forgot to mention: good point.

  4. They had the most beautiful mother/daughter relationship on the show. And this show receives permanent side-eye for killing off the only two Asian characters.

    1. No wonder this society considers POC life so damn expendable. They're desensitized from seeing us die over and over again, with no living characters to provide balance.

Something tells me Bonnie is going to get killed off either during this season, or the next.

    2. Killing her would be the last straw for me. Hell, killing her mom might just about do it. And if they touch Arnez/Jamie . . .

  5. I wish they didn't kill these two off because I really did not get them. Were they passing as white because they were very well blended into rich white plantation owner society. Also the Black vampire Harper or something was getting real close with Pearl I was hoping to see some Asian woman/Black man vampire lovin'.

And Sundown town is the best way to describe this, sad thing is we have many more to go.

    @Marona
I call him Arnez too. Funny thing is Both Robert Ricard and Persia White were on One on One and Girlfriends that were cancelled as soon as WB and UPN merged to make the CW. Dem Negroes are dead already.

Wealth + vampire compulsion = being left alone.

  6. I don't watch the show but is the message that if they aren't busy playing a white man's sexual fantasy, we have no time for you either?

    1. Pretty much.

Pearl outlived her potential white love interest by 145 years. And Anna was simply too pretty. I've noticed how, aside for Bonnie, they get rid of beautiful WoC quickly on the show.

  7. EVERYTIME this shit happens I just feel like throwing my remote control at the screen ! Then why do I still watch this sh*t? Because I want to see how far will they still go and trust me, they will go far.

I don't have any experience in production/film-making or any of that. But it just make me want to write a damn scenario with POC made by POC (like this one and then send it to BET (*sigh* they aren't better either). How come they still haven't created a fantasy/supernatural show yet ?? If damn MTV have the money to make this stupid Teen wolf thing, I don't understand why they can't ??!!

Okay, anyway, I'm getting out of the main topic.

    1. Well its the white money makes who want to market to white people. So in order to do that they want have to kill POC like how the KKK and Nazi did.

  8. As much as this pains me, I have to thank for doing this. The fiasco that was True Blood was a good warning to stay away from this show, but after reading your post I know I wont' ever be tempted to watch this 'ish.

  9. WTF Kelly Hu is gorgeous and omg why did she have to go. I don't even watch this show and I'm irritated about this

  10. There should really be some angry people protesting this sh*t. It's ridiculous! I wish I knew how to start an online petition because I'd be trying to push for a revolution in small-screen entertainment.

Oreal12, I'm with you. We need a POC show created by POC that stars POC, and I'd even push it further to demand that it stays on the internet and not move to cable. I think that's why we have so many legislators flippin' the heck out about the internet because they can't control it like they do with tv and movies. The most popular members on youtube are asian men, international (especially asian) music is becoming more popular, and black people are doing our own things (Awkward Black Girl)and not worshiping white people like we should. *rolls eyes* Sorry, I went on a little rant there.
Back to the topic, my brother watches this show for some odd reason because as he puts it, "all the hot girls keep dying". I was more into TB but I hated the way they treated Tara in that show. I guess these supernatural shows is a way for white people to say that if they could live eternally, then they'd live without us and if we were there we could only be beneath them.

  11. Very informative.

I haven't seen the show myself. From the previews alone, I thought this was going to be a typical white vampire orgy of blood and sex. Looks like I wasn't too far off.

With the exception of the Blade movies(and correct me if I'm wrong because I was a kid when I watched them), isn't that what all of these vampire shows/movies are? There really isn't much variation in them; at least that's what I see.

    2. Blade made Vampires cool again..but alot of white people hated Blade because he was a black dhampir fighting a bunch of white vampires..So yeah Vampire Diaries and Twilight is white people is about white vampires always trying to ice skate uphill. We need Blade back

    3. the movie would last about 15 min...but I'll watch that than the crap the Colored White (CW) keeps putting up.

  12. Uggh. I actually really liked Vampire Diaries at first, because it was the first decent vampire show since, well, pretty much Buffy, what with fun banter and interesting plots and a heroine with some gorram self-preservation instinct. Then I stopped watching it after, I think, 1.5 seasons 'cause of lack of time to watch any TV, but with this series of articles I'm definitely not picking it back up.

All I have to say is Blech.

  13. its kind of weird that they had two asian characters back in 1864? wouldn't white people have enslaved/hated them too instead of treating them as equals? but of course they never explain how this happens or how they got to america etc.. but i was so mad when ana died! she was my favorite character. i was hoping someone how they could resurrection her character and keep her there (like maybe the stake didnt go through and she was really alive all that time) .. one of the most shocking deaths in that series for me :-(
