Underappreciated Actress of Color #54: Jennifer Tilly

Born Jennifer Elizabeth Chan, Ms. Tilly here is of Chinese descent, which I think most folks tend to forget.  And if you Google pics of this woman, you'll also notice how even though she's in her early fifties, she simply refuses to age.

Talk about a fine wine.

I can't remember what I first saw her in, but I do remember liking her in whatever I saw - Sister Mary Explains It AllBound with Gina Gershon, her random episode on Frasier, or her recurring role as Crystal on the cancelled-too-soon Out of Practice (2005), which I started watching because Henry Grubstick Christopher Gorham stars in it (along with Stockard Channing).

Jennifer "The Unabombshell" Tilly is also a professional poker player; at one point she actually outlasted 600 other players which really throws me.  She's so expressive and whimsical (with that distinctively high, raspy voice) that I have to wonder what her poker face must look like.

She took a break from acting to play poker for a while, but as you can see on her IMDB page,  she's returned to acting with a vengeance.  Miss Thang here has five upcoming projects scheduled for release over the next 1-2 years, and I can't wait to see what she does next.

  1. Really cool post.I love Jennifer Tilly ( my b-day buddy). And you are right the woman has not aged since the nineties. I actually didn't even know she was any where near fifty years old. I'm mad how I had no idea she was working as much as she has been recently. I mean five projects....wow. Being a bit of a horrophile Ms.Tilly and her gorgeous sister Meg have a special place in my heart because of Jen's work in Bride of Chucky and Meg's in Carmilla. If you can't tell I have huge girl-crushes on both of them. Just a beautiful and talented family.

  2. Hello,
Wow..Jennifer Tilly is the most amazing woman ever. Im a very huge fan and I have to agree with StellaMari, Meg and Jennifer always have a special place in my heart considering the fact they both came from very troubling childhoods.

  3. See, that's what 3 square meals a day will do for your body and face. So glad she hasn't followed the trend of middle-aged actresses who decide that they need to be waifish...not a good look at any age, but definitely not at an age when your muscle tone and collagen can be decreasing as a result of menopause.
I'll never understand why some women her age want to inject their faces with fillers when a plate full of sandwiches would achieve much more attractive results.

Thank you. While I'm sure she tweaked a thing or two once she hit her fifties, she still looked consistently fabulous through her 20s, 30s, and 40s. And I strongly believe it had to due with the fact that she ate.

It's like she destroyed the bullshit theory about not being able to have a career or be desired if you're not skin & bones.

  6. Yeah, it was a small role but I just saw her on an episode of Modern Family...she was playing the "hot wife" of one of Ed O'Neill's friends, so she was basically playing the counterpart to Sofia Vergara and holding it down despite being 15 years older (and not looking older than Vergara).
I thought it was great to see a non-bony woman b/c the other woman who plays the mom on that show looks like she just came from a refugee camp, and also looked about 20 years older than Tilly.
Yeah, she's probably tweaked but doesn't look like a disfigured freak b/c good food has done part of the work for her (your skin needs good fats to replicate itself people!!)
But you know most WW probably describe her as being "fat".
