  1. Catching up on emails (and yes I got your other one and will be replying shortly) and I was about to drop you a line to see if you saw the finale.

My thoughts on the finale [SPOILERS]:

    What I didn't care for:

-They never revealed the truth about Gwen and Lance being enchanted by Morgana.

-They never revealed the truth about Uther's death.

Both of these (especially the former) need to be rectified next season ASAP.

-I was sad to see Helios get offed. That motherfucker had swagger. Even Agravaine kinda grew on me at the end. It was like they finally decided to develop him in the last two eps.

-I was sorta sad about blonde chick getting offed. I liked her and her husband (who is fine as hell and if I'm not mistaken starred in Law & Order UK with Jamie Bamber and Freema Agyeman. That's where I know him from. I realized this while typing this out). She and the hubby had potential as characters but I get they're supposed to be the catalyst for Arthur to see the goddess that he has in Gwen.

-And maybe I missed something but how did Morgana ever make the jump that Eremus was the old man Merlin took the form of. Was that ever explained?

    What I loved:

-Cinematography: they definitely stepped their game up for the finale.

-It seems that Merlin is starting to use his brains now instead of just bumbling through and getting by with spells and potions. While Merlin is known for his magic, he's also known for his wisdom. Calling for the dragon, and neutralizing Morgana's magic was brilliant and he did it all on his own and without Gaius's help. That was refreshing for a change. I also liked how he inspired Arthur.

-Merlin also seems to be developing a more ruthless streak which I liked. When Agravaine and his men cornered Merlin, Merlin didn't have a single fuck to give and casually killed their asses. Granted it was self defense but it was clear that Merlin was through fucking around.

-Loved the fact that Gwen even stepped it up in the fight and managed to hold her own even when she was outmatched.

Overall I was pleased, particularly with the pic above. And rumor has it that Mordred might be returning next season to aid Morgana. He knows Merlin is Eremus. Business is about to pick up.

Oh and to the Gwen haters: STAY MAD!!!!!!!!!

    Yes!!!

    neutralizing Morgana's magic was brilliant

And soooooooooo hot how he did it.

Did you notice the BM/WW vs BW/WM angle?

She had a vision of herself talking to Emrys in the future.

I was sorta sad about blonde chick getting offed.

Indeed. She was a bad bitch; she saved Arthur's ass.

I both liked & disliked how they handled the sword in the stone.

  3. I don't watch the show, but she looks frickin' gorgeous and wonderfully regal in that pic. Awesome! :)

  5. I still gotta catch up on the past seasons on HULU. Don't give me that nasty look.

  6. Yeah I've been waiting for this. On the one hand I agree with people that they need to make sure folks know that Gwen was enchanted. on the other hand he wanted her anyway even believing that she kissed another dude of her own free will. I like it when a man can get over that.

Me and big sis were sad to see Helios go. The guy was so cool. And it was funny how he was showing up Agravaine in every scene they shared.

The Tristan and Isolde bit was kinda tired for me. I thought they were lame in this portrayal. Especially knowing that Their story is what Romeo and Juliet is based off of.

I just wanted Gwen to crane kick Morgana in the neck. Just one good time. Just like at the end of the original Karate kid. Kick that heaux in the throat and Arthur can come running out there hugging and congratulating her.

I only visit the Arwen sites because I have no desire to fight with haters when I'm happy for my second favorite IR couple. the first being Simon and Alisha on Misfits. Don't get me started on that because I am still in a glass case of emotions over that ish. I be over here singing "I will go down with this ship."

  7. @ Pepp and Ank:

I do hope we'll talk about how Misfits ended b/c that ish just wasn't fair to me. I mean, pair Alisha and Simon up for THIS? I don't see why she left Curtis in the first place to be honest; they were an awesome couple and I loved how they were physically intimate even with her power as a seriously fucked up handicap. It didn't really make sense why Alisha would become so attached to Simon, given that she eventually gives up her power altogether so she could have easily moved on to someone new. Couples break up all the time on that show and guys were snogging random chicks almost regularly. They didn't have to be a forever couple.

And what the fuck happened to Curtis' other WOC girlfriend? I swear they completely forgot about her in the following season. It was funny too b/c one guy was turning his girlfriend into a zombie but Curtis did not once think back to the girlfriend who'd been gunned down in the season two finale.

In general there are not enough romantic portrayals involving black persons outside of black productions. We're hardly seen in the super hero and fantasy genres so I wouldn't mind seeing more black couples. IR is cool and all but sometimes it's tiring if there are wars being waged with white women clutching pearls and WOC fans arguing for treatment as valid women within these fictional universes.

These universes which are a reflection of societal values are heavily flawed. I just don't see the point of fighting these bitches over often boring and short-lived IR portrayals.

Now that Gwen is queen I'm expecting a hell of a lot more involvement in the story for the remaining seasons. And my god, Arthur and his uncle had way more interaction than Gwen did with her own brother. And Arthur's uncle betrayed him. So seriously, they need to play up the sibling relationship b/c I'm just not seeing it.

Another thing, with the dearth of female portrayals it comes off as if most women are evil unless proven otherwise. And given the way Gwen was treated despite being enchanted . . . and how her father was killed and she was nearly executed on at least two occasions . . . I dunno. I don't care if we see girlfriends, lone warriors or more princesses, it'd be nice if there were more women with recurring and frequent roles.

And even though Morgana is supposed to be an evil bitch I'd like her to be treated with more dignity. Like how X-men do Magneto. More complexity I guess. Merlin, he's been annoying from time to time but as Ank said he's definitely gaining a mean streak. He's no pushover and he uses his arsenal of skills smartly.

  9. Yes!

I have to say that I doubt they'd reveal on Gwen and Lancelot being enchanted by Morgana. Remember Gwen threw away the enchanted ring while she was locked up. It is really looking like they may never bring it up again now she's Queen.

  10. Though I have never seen this series, I still love what I see in the picture and yes, I'm just waiting for the haters to come on out.I'm expecting it.

You and me both Queen Gwen's wardrobe is number 1 on my list of things to be excited about next season for.

Like Pepp I only hang on Arwen comms. I got enough when Freema was on Dr. Who.

I both liked & disliked how they handled the sword in the stone.

This as well seems like Arthur can't do shit for himself. I like Arthur, but at this rate why is he King? Everything that Arthur did in the legends has been done by Merlin. Merlin should just let one of these plans kill Arthur and crown himself.

Really liked the "Long live the Queen!" moment. Now I am just waiting for Gwen/Arthur sexy times or since it is a family show Gwen/Arthur snugly/cuddle times.

You know...Merlin is getting seriously sexy. The way he handled Morgana had me dyin'. He just slipped into the castle ninjitsu style and neutralized her like it was nothing.

And yes...Merlin just needs to be king.

Now I am just waiting for Gwen/Arthur sexy times or since it is a family show Gwen/Arthur snugly/cuddle times.

The show's supposedly getting darker, but I don't think it'll be getting sexier.

    It has that tendency.

  15. @Ank:

I know she's dead. But they didn't got to very great lengths to reverse her death like how Seth tried to bring back Shannon. Shannon was well into the grave and getting juicy but Seth didn't forget about her. So all I'm saying is when Curtis was helping Seth try to resurrect Shannon why didn't he think about Nikki? I blame the writing, but it didn't sit well with me that he never thought to try it . . .

We don't even know where she was buried . . . at least we know they buried Alisha.

    *Misfits Spoilers*

I totally get where you're coming from. I liked Alisha and Curtis too and their sexy times were extra sexy. But I got the feeling that they put those two together just because they were both black. You know, put them together so no one can complain and then break them up so we can make a IR relationship. I felt like they actually gave Alisha and Simon a chance to fall for each other.

I do have a problem with them just crossing Ruth Neega's character off the show at the end of season two. When she was dying Curtis was all like "I swear I'm going to get my power back and save you blah blah blah" But that storyline got dropped like a hot potato. What's up with that?

How they just gon bury Alisha's body in the woods like that? She doesn't have family or friends that might ask after her? What about how she hasn't completed her community service? Wouldn't they put a warrant out for her arrest?

I will say that Simon/Alisha storyline was the most romantic and tragic thing I have seen on television in a long time. I'm still sad about it. I'm crying in the rain all by myself and violins are playing. I want my ship back.

  18. the haters have been going crazy since the beginning, the tumblr crew and I have been actively trolling them with their typical "I just don't like her, its not anything about race."

  19. I don't watch this show but this clip just makes m think about how many white girls' heads are EXPLODING right now.
B/c they cannot tolerate any story where they are not the object of desire of any and all men of all races. And they don't understand it when they are not.

Plain and white and skinny is always supposed to win the rock, paper, scissors against the black girl.

  21. I love this show with a passion of a thousand suns...even with all the little problematic things the writers do that annoy the shit outta me lol.

For better or worse, they took the show up several notches from episode 9 (Lancelot du Lac) all the way to the finale. Here are some of my strongest impressions from those episodes.

    - The now-infamous episode 9: Did they really just Jezebelify Gwen? Really? Really?! Up to that point, the writers managed to avoid making Gwen any of the unholy trinity of black female stereotypes: the mammy (asexual self-effacing caretaker), Sapphire (sassy, overbearing loudmouth/nag) and Jezebel (hypersexual temptress), which, for me, made that episode all the more heart-cringing.
    - The scene in the council room also made my heart cringe. Heck, that entire episode was just...*shudders* It'll be a while before I watch that ep again.
-Episode 10: I blame the writers for not adequately giving Elyan (Gwen's bro) a characterization that rings true in light of what his sister's been through. Even if he was ashamed/embarrassed by his sister's apparent behavior, I would've liked to see some kind of backstory. It could be something as simple as one bit of dialogue about his conflicted loyalty between Arthur and Gwen, or a moment of him chatting with Leon (who grew up with them). The writers completely dropped the ball with that, but I still enjoyed the episode.
-Episode 11: Great parallel with Arthur/Mithian and Gwen/Helios. I found it hilarious how some racist fandom folk thought that Arthur and Gwen were better off with the same-race potential partners because there was better "chemistry" (code for "I think they look better together because they're the same color"). It was interesting how Helios toed this fine line between alluring and dangerous. I was a bit worried for Gwen at first. I'm so glad Helios wasn't rapey. He was quite gorgeous, and it would have been difficult for me to take in his gorgeousness if he was rapey. Also, I kinda wanted Morgana and Helios to get it on lol, moreso for Morgana's sake. Morgana could use a hug and some good loving. And what's with Arthur handing out banishment threats like cookies now?
-Episode 12 - Pure awesomeness and it went by so fast. The simpleton shtick was a bit long, but the tree-hugging moment made it all worth it.
-Episode 13, finale - not as strong as ep 12, though I loved the coronation. They tried to pack too much in, and it felt rushed. It needed to be at least an hour long.
-Merlin helping Arthur with the sword. BOOOOOOO.
-When Gwen walked up to Arthur with a determined look on her face and gave her short but heartfelt declaration of her undying love, I thought she was actually walking up to him to smack him and curse him out for banishing her. Wishful thinking on my part.
-Tristan and Isolde were horrifyingly underutilized. I was sure that Isolde was gonna be Gwen's new female friend (FINALLY!) and eventual royal bodyguard. BOOOOOOOO.
-How is it that Arthur's super duper uber sword Excalibur didn't kill Helios?
-Why'd Helios have to die :( I prefer him as a villain than slimy ass Agravaine.
    -Badass Merlin killing Aggy. YAAAAAAAAY.
-Merlin having THREE golden opportunities to reveal his secret and not doing so (Isolde dying when he might've been able to save her with magic, Gwen fighting with Morgana, Merlin in the cave with Arthur). BOOOOOO. HISSSSSSS. WTF?!

  22. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they write her as Queen (esp. Morgana's reaction). She can't be so easily dismissed anymore.

And does this technically make Elyan a prince now?

Prince Elyan of Camelot. *shivers* Has a nice ring to it.

You may be interested in visiting this blog, zahrawithaz really goes into Merlin episodes and will most likely have the answers to some of your questions.

For example, I wondered why Elyan did not react more when Gwen was banished from Camelot. But when you think of his relationship with Gwen, how unstable and fraught with tension it seems to be, it does make sense that he wouldn't react the way we'd expect. Anyway zahrawithaz explains it better!
