POC I'm Watching: Bianca Lawson

***Spoilers***

Because David Solomon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is a co-executive producer on Nikita, I wasn't surprised to see a Buffy alumna pop up on the show...looking no older than she did back in 1997.

*nods* Holla if you love being Negro.

So once again we have the beautiful woman of color enter the scene.  This one, however, is not an assassin or soldier of any kind.  She's a civilian and a sensitive artist.

This gentle, sweet, WoC is also into white guys (go figure) but at least in her case, her white guy likes her back.  So much that he risks his own life (but he risks hers as well, so that kinda buys him nothing).

Her beau - you guessed it - is a super assassin.  Portrayed by a Devon Sawa who's so grown up I still have trouble believing it's him, he falls for her when she collapses in their building hallway and has to be rushed to a hospital for dialysis.  Who says romance is dead?

But...in the spirit of predictable plots and fails, this beautiful WoC suffers from what I've fondly dubbed Ilario Syndrome: she shows up, wins us over, and dies.

RIP Emily

  1. Man, now i definitely need to watch Nikita. Was this from the most recent episode?
Also, you should check out the racialicious link i sent. Common denominator with all those women is that they are involved with white men.
    Go figure.

It's the CW, so I'd expect nothing less.

  6. I love Bianca she looks just like she did back on Buffy hell back on Saved By the Bell. Black don't crack is a simple fact. The woman is still playing high school characters and no one can tell her ish.

I did hate the slave role oops I mean "hand-maiden" that she played on Vampire Diaries.

I also saw her in that new show on FX American Horror Story but it is freaky as hell and she was there for a spilt second on the 1st episode.

  8. I saw that episode! - their relationship was cute - he was so into her and was all about to change his life n shit to keep her safe

but of course, she gets shot. Because gawd forbid a lovely black woman get some happiness.

Also, yes, I confess, I'm in awe of how flawlessly some black women age. :-P I was talking to this woman once and I figured, oh, she's prolly like 40 y/o or summat, but she turned out to be SIXTY FREAKING FOUR. I felt my face betrayed the disbelief I felt.

There's nothing WRONG with looking or being older, but, you gotta admit, it's freaking cool to look 2 whole decades younger than you are!

  9. The fact that Bianca Lawson has not been given her own vehicle: be it film or tv series is a crime in itself.

And Ankh, what did you think about the ep that featured the black female guardian?

I thought: they're really into BW/WM on this show.

  11. "Ilario syndrome." Good. Add it to the lexicon, cause it is spot-on.

  12. I thought I recognized this beautiful woman when I was watching Nikita! (Anyway, just a heads up, that show HATES POC. EVERY POC dies (I think only 2 survive the season). There's another beautiful black woman on the show but she is delegated a petty, jealous and incompetent role. The only reason I watched this was to see the MagQ reprise her assassin in heels role (Naked Weapon 2002). Won't recommend it.)
