And Down Goes Massa...I Mean, Massie

(Thanks, Field Negro!!!)
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A racial comment in the restroom of a Las Vegas Strip casino restroom preceded a single fatal punch that left a tourist from Utah dead and a Florida tourist jailed in Nevada on a murder charge, authorities said Wednesday.

Benjamin Gerard Hawkins, 37, of Gainesville, Fla., took offense to John Massie's comment about "a black man in a yellow shirt" while both men were in the restroom at O'Sheas Las Vegas Casino shortly before the fatal 12:45 a.m. confrontation, according to a police report.

Moments later, Massie was felled by a single punch to the jaw.

"One punch," police homicide Lt. Lewis Roberts told The Associated Press. "He was out. Never got back up.
John Massie should've kept his mouth shut.  That goes for all the John Massies of the world.

I've been reading about how this dude got himself perished by one punch after making some racial comments.  Allegedly, the two shared words in the bathroom first, where Hawkins told him to shut up.  After they left, Massie continued to follow Hawkins and was again told to shut up.  To which Massie inquired, "What are you going to do about it?"

Silence is golden for a reason, children.

A lot of commenters on the John Massie link are saying Hawkins had no right to kill Massie.  A lot of white whine is spilling out, and folks are even hurling about the term "double standards".  A white woman even had the stupidity to write, "Typical black guy resorting to violence because he doesn't believe in Freedom of Speech."*

To which a black woman promptly replied, "One could say typical white guy spouting off and expecting no repercussions. BTW depending on what he said, some states will see it as provocation or a threat."

And in the irony of hilarious ironies, when some commenters scratched their asses and wondered how sticking one's hands into their pockets could be perceived as threatening, all the hood folks other commenters responded that Massie could've been reaching for a weapon (Derrick Jones, that one's for you).

First of all, as I was saying in my post about Black Cloud, white people don't get to decide how a person of color should respond to white racism.  You don't get to make comments about me to me, and then control how I react to them.  If I choose to punch you...then you're getting punched and that's all there is to it.  Understand that when uttering racial comments to a POC, in addition to that POC simply walking away, beating, stabbing, and shooting are also on the menu.  Just because you didn't order them specifically doesn't mean they won't be served.

Fuck what you think you know/heard about POC.  If you think that randomly walking up to one of us and mouthing off about our skintone is a good idea, you clearly don't know dick.  Not all POC are the same; ergo, never assume you know whom you're dealing with.  You may very well hit the psycho lottery and wind up drowning in your own blood.

Two, as it's been repeatedly pointed out, Hawkins didn't intend to kill Massie.  How could he have known Massie would drop after one punch?  Both men were tourists from opposite ends of the country.  Massie, on the other hand, should've known good and well he was all hat and no cattle, and thus kept his mouth from writing checks his ass couldn't cash.  Some people on the John Massie link are crying about how Massie didn't deserve to die because of something he said.  Well, did he?  Not really, though your mileage may vary.  Did he deserve to be punched?  Yes...yes, he did.  And this is something white folks really need to keep in mind: what you think you deserve after uttering a racial comment is irrelevant.  What will happen, will happen regardless of what you think should happen.

Three, no matter what the outcome of Hawkins' fate is, Massie will still be dead.  For all you white folks who feel he died in vain, there's a way to make his death matter. The next time you feel like gettin' racial with POC, just stop and ask yourself, "What Would Massie Do?"

And then do the exact opposite.

  1. Well, to paraphrase Smokey from Friday, "He got knocked the fuck out, man!"

First things first: Folks got to learn to STFU and SYAD. Period.

You don't know who you're dealing with, what they've come away from. You might be catching a person on the worst damn day of her/his life, and you decide you come out of your mouth and spout off some bullshit and think there may be no consequences? Sorry, but those days are over. A lot of people have stopped giving a damn about a whole lot of stuff and they will not back down from a challenge or a threat. Step into a person's space like Massie did Hawkins, and a punch to the face may be the least of your worries.

I can't be moved by Massie's death. Sorry. I guess I'm just a heartless bitch, but dude was warned. Motherfuckers need to learn to HEED warnings instead of thinking the rules don't apply to them.

One punch? Damn. That's some old school Mike Tyson shit right there.

    People keep saying that!!

That's the first thing I thought!

  3. Maybe it's because I just had an argument with a racist white person, but I could not muster up the feelings to give even the tiniest fuck about this Massie man (pardon my language).

How much you wanna bet this Hawkins guy rots in jail? Meanwhile (and I really hate to bring her up), Casey Anthony's horse-faced, white ass is galloping around free.

And why are racists so quick to say, "Freedom of Speech?" I am not the government oppressing you! I am an individual calling you out on your buffoonery, stupidity, and ignorance who is telling you to shut up! Which, according to your precious freedom of speech, I also have the right to.

    Sorry, Massie, no one cares.

Falsely shouting Fire in a crowded theater is not Freedom of Speech either; so one should be mindful of the repercussions.

And to all of the white people who justify the killing of a black men “because he had a dark object in his hands.” Or because, “I felt threatened by the wallet and his provocative stance.” I give you This....

Remember… the flood of empathy flows more freely at the loss of white life by black hands. The magnitude of the crime increases one-hundred-fold in such scenarios.

    -Overprivileged white woman

Everytime white people are called out on their bullshit set of words, we always here the old "Freedom of Speech" excuse. Freedom is no license for hate OR chaos, and just as they think they have the "right" to say hateful shit, WE also have a right to call their stupid asses on it!

F.O.S. isn't reserved for clueless, overprivileged, racist, white folks, and that fool Massey had it coming to him.

  6. Am I the only person who misses the good old days when you could whoop somebodies ass for talking shit and society had the common sense not portray you as some violent criminal?

Sorry but sometimes people need they asses whooped. Seems like people in general had more respect back in the day. People are such pussies nowadays. This is like the Age of Bitch Shit.

  7. @ Girl in Question

LOL I wonder if over privileged white people people that complain about O.J getting off will be so quick to complain about her ass?

  8. To over privileged white folks who think that their priviledge will protect them, take this as warning: Please don't count on the fact that I care about my rep, you may just catch me on a day that I don't particularly give a fuck that your mouth decided to write a check your ass can't cash.

  9. I am a 48 year old african american male
while I agree with this post and the comments about massie

This is why I Try to avoid both Threats and actions of causal violence.
I'm regularly threaten by people ,who say things like I'll knock you out,put you to sleep, fuck you up,etc not realizing how easily and quickly serious unintended injuries can result.
In virtually all cases those making the threats
    where
    1. not absolutely serious
    2. do not intend to kill me
    3. do not expect to be arrested and charged with threats or assault
    4. are not completely aware of the fact that i may not be as easy as they think
5.that I may not fight in kind:
meaning if you put your hands on me,while i would hope i would always engage in the utmost restraint, I not going to fight you,I going to do you,as in by whatever means i intend to incapacitate you,ie ensure that you are not capable of putting your hands on me again temporarily or permanently.

Life is not I repeat not a comic book, cartoon, videogame,tv show or film
the results of causal violence can be tragic and unexpected for both parties and the consequences
    severe.

As A result you can say whatever,I can verbally respond or not,I can walk away but violence is not an option unless the other party starts it,then all bets are off.

  10. Wow, he deserved to get punch.

As the whole freedom of speech thing, that is bullshit. White people you can say all the bullshit you want but best believe that there will be some consequences and repercussions.

If I start unleashing some freedom of speech of my own about their mothers, we will see how script will be flipped.

  11. Sounds like something that deserves a Darwin Award for eliminating stupid people from the gene pool.

#1 you never know what a person is going through or capable of
#2 Massie was given a warning to cease and desist that he ignored
#3 I do feel sorry for Hawkins because he never intended to kill anyone and given that his victim is white we all know he will not receive a fair trial
#4 White privilege got them thinking they live in a consequence free world. This leads to them not having common sense and engaging in all kinds of reckless behavior. Like that silly UCLA chick who thought she could talk shit about Asians at a school that is 50% Asian. Dumb asses.

  12. #2 Massie was given a warning to cease and desist that he ignored

People keep ignoring this part of the story. They try to oversimplify the situation by saying Massie made a comment about a black man in a yellow shirt and got punched for it. No, no, no, no, no. Massie made multiple comments from which Hawkins initially walked away. But Massie wouldn't stop. And the most irritating part is, friggin' security witnessed everything and didn't intervene! I noticed people are talking about this less and less.

So what is a POC supposed to do when walking away doesn't work, and the people who are supposed to intervene...don't? Just stand there and humbly endure racial abuse?

White people need to go ahead and just kill that Uncle-Tom-turning-the-other-cheek fantasy right the hell now. Remember Omar Thornton, ladies and gents? People were warned he wouldn't be the last. Hawkins won't be either, even if they give him life in imprison. Because if you're going to POC in a situation where our only option is to go down, then we'll go down and we'll take everybody with us.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Racist like some of those White people in that AOL article on;ly get what they want to get and will make it something that is far from the truth.

They want Hawkins to pay but they are..as usual.. being cowards about it. blame the Black man that is all they want to focus on, then they think that we just should just accept them pouncing us with all sort of racial attacks.

Though it's unfortunate John Massie died, he should have seen it coming. He kept on and on. I'm quite sure that if somebody was constantly hounding them with ugly words behind their backs, those same White people criticizing him would have probably done the same thing. If he would have been of their racial calibre, they would have understood. The racial excuses got to go.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I hadn't heard about this incident. White folks must really believe their own lies about us. I mean we were the docile darkies happy to be pickin' cotton from sun up to sun down. I guess they conveniently forgot about Nat, Harriet and the rest.

Why this fool thought he could get away with this behavior after repeated warnings is beyond me. I can't even muster up any sympathy at all.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Freedom of speech my ass. Sure, you're free to say almost anything, but don't expect a cookie for calling somebody a nigger.

To me, this situation is like if I kept saying profane things to my mother. I mean, who in their right mind just takes abuse, especially when you're supposed to be treating your fellow man with respect? If I said some shit to my mom best believe I'm going out with a broken jaw.

And if somebody is coming after me after I repeatedly told that person to leave me alone, and no one is rushing to my defense, I will likely consider options to end the situation.

Hawkins didn't intend to kill this guy. It's not his fault Massie had such a weak constitution. Sure, you could charge him for assault or something, but there was no intent to kill. One punch, that's it. I could see Hawkins defending himself by accusing the deceased of a hate crime. From what I can see this guy was stalking and verbally/mentally/emotionally abusing Hawkins.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I hadn't heard this story until now but d*mn. This Massie didn't deserve to die but he definitely deserved the punch in the mouth. Its a shame it ended his life but he shouldn't have been running off at the mouth. You never know what the next man is capable of so why even take the chance. I'm sure he figured since Hawkins walked away initially he could just keep going with no consequence. I hope this Hawkins guy doesn't do serious time behind it though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, a lot of people haven't heard this story and I'm not surprised. Omar Thornton's story qot quieted down with a quickness too. Annoying as it is, just go ahead and take it as a good sign.

I, for one, will be keeping strict tabs on Gerard Hawkins's case. I even feel a petition coming on.

I feel the staff at O'Shea's should be rounded up and charged with negligence for not intervening the moment they realized shit was about to go down.

And Hawkins sure as hell as should not spend the next several years in prison.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Racist Speech is not freedom of speech. I dont feel sorry for this Massie guy. Not only was he racist, he was also a bully. Following the guy out of the restroom and taunting him with "what are you going to do". I know his type and they get away with a lot of horrible things. Probably why he thought he could this time around but oh well. He really did get knocked the fuck out. Hawkins needs to call Baez (Casey Anthony's Lawyer). He doesn't deserve to rot in jail for this. Quite frankly i would love for this to get a lot of media attention because you know once its being plastered all over the airwaves, the white people you know and work with will start offering their opinions. Would love to hear them.

I hope it gets lots of media attention too, but unfortunately it's not right now, which means it probably won't.

But if it were, at least I don't have any white coworkers to worry about. Because unless they're saying, "Massie was a racist piece of shit who got knocked the fuck out", I'm not really interested in their "opinions".

  20. See, White folks? This is how White privilege is starting to bite y'all in the ass!

See, in the Good Ol' Days, y'all didn't have to watch y'all damn mouth. Y'all used to us singing and marching and getting our ass whupped then turning the other cheek. But after 400 years we getting a lil' tired of that shit. Catch us on the wrong day, we might not give a fuck, and whatever happen after that is on you.

Daren Abbey, Neo-Nazi, Jailed After Allegedly Picking Fight With Wrong Man

“Baker and his friend left the bar, with Abbey allegedly following behind shouting racial slurs. Then Abbey made "a motion like he was going to do something," Baker told KREM.”

  25. @ M. Gibson

Damn..."the next time" was sooner than I thought!

Idaho police say a neo-Nazi picked a fight with an African American man and got knocked out with a single punch. Not surprising, considering the man who threw the punch was wearing a shirt from a Spokane, Wa. boxing club.

Daren Abbey, 28, threatened to stab 46-year-old Marlon Baker in a Bayview, Idaho bar on July 3 and told him "blacks are not welcome here," Kootenai County Sheriff's Office sources told NWCN.

Baker and his friend left the bar, with Abbey allegedly following behind shouting racial slurs. Then Abbey made "a motion like he was going to do something," Baker told KREM.

Baker threw a single punch, knocking Abbey to the ground, investigators said.

"[It was] just a straight right hand, that's all it was," said Baker. "It's really good that he stepped into it."

Abbey was treated for a possible broken nose. He is being held on $75,000 bond on charges of battery and malicious harassment.

Well, damn. Baker is my second new personal hero!

Notice again how no one intervened on behalf of Baker. But once the cops got involved, everyone suddenly decided to sing like canaries.

Anyhoo...he got knocked the fuck out!!!
