Contemplating "White men good, all others bad"

This is what I get from TV/movies nowadays: White men good, all others bad. And they've been laying it on thick too (especially on TV).

I am sick to death of the trailer for Beastly. We've already cringed at No Strings Attached.  And now, I just saw the trailer for I am Number Four

So I turn to the lil sis and her friend, asking, "Is it just me, or are the number of awesome/romantic/invincible/superhuman white guy films increasing as the number of BM/WW couples increase...even at younger ages?"

To which they reply, "Yes."

To which I reply, "Hollywood is overcompensating."

Nigerians have a proverb: A drum beats loudest when it's close to bursting.  I really don't think I need to elaborate on that one.

  1. Even if I hadn't soured on the 'whole teen-drama/ pretty Hollywood people with problems' romance movie schtick, the good ole Magic Negress plot device would have done me in.

I haven't cringed so hard since I heard Brad Pitt mangling my country's accent in 'Meet Joe Black'. >_<

  2. I am tired of the whole "white kids save the day" movies.

  3. Really? I thought I was the only one. My friends are all like: Lets go see a movie, and I'm like, are there any black people in it?

    "....No but-"

"I'll pass, thanks." I don't need to see that shit all the time, give me a break. How fucking narcissistic can you get? It's soo sickening. Further more, it's boring as hell. The same stories told over and over and over.

Enough already, we know white people think they're the best thing ever but shouting it to the roof tops isn't going to make everyone else believe it! Eventually people just stop listening to you. Fucking get over yourselves white Americans. Seriously.

  4. Then my friends are all like "Oh you're a wet blanket, you're no fun. It's just a fantasy, it's not reality, it's just an escape."

"Yes it's an escape, but not for you! It's an escape for white people from your black/asian/latino ass. If it's a fantasy why does it HAVE to have only white people in it?! They "escape" from us in everyday life, they have to carry that shit into films? And how stupid do we look supporting that shit?"

Right about here they stick their fingers in their ears and go "LA,LA,LA,LA,LA,LA!"

  5. Is anyone else having trouble telling the difference between the lead from "Beastly" and the lead from "Number Four"?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Hi, lurker here, just popping up to say the two leads (Beastly & Number 4) are the same person: Alex Pettyfer, representing the UK. Also, obviously, representing terrible movies.

    Love the blog.

  7. Okay, I'll admit that when I first saw the trailer, I was curious. I don't want to pass judgement on a movie I haven't seen, but if this turns out to be garbage then it's all the more disappointing becuase it actually has subversive potential. I liked the part where the hero discovers what people actually think of him. It seems to characterize the relationship between white america and...everyone else. They really do believe their own hype and fancy that everyone else does as well.

Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tales. I think it could be told from an anti-oppression perspective, but Hollywood won't go that far. I mean look at the hero. He's "beastly", but in a really sexy, exotic, alternative way; with strategically placed scars and tattoos. Is that supposed to repulse me? I LAUGHED when he said, "Pretty gruesome, huh?"

Why not have a beast who's not just a pretty typical self-absorbed, annoying douchebag, but genuinely loathesome? So not only in these types of movies to they get to be the heroes, but they can be privileged asses and the viewer won't totally hate them because of their hidden goodness which is their TRUE nature.

  8. It's definitely been kicked into overdrive since Avatar. "But if we frame it to show that white people don't MEAN to be so goddamned awesome, we're just born to be leaders, reluctant leaders and bearers of responsibilities that people don't want...THAT makes it different and shows how it's not our fault everyone else is inferior!"

I still can't get over Harry Potter. The entire series of films said: wizards, witches and other organized groups of mythical beings* are mostly white. And poor, little Harry - why he's special and he doesn't even know it! So he's different! Even in a purely fantasy world, POC are a minority, and mostly shown as love interests.

I have a list of criteria that limits the films I see. One of the things I've added in the past few years is not just the absence of POC, but how they're portrayed when they are present. If the only black woman in the film is a magical woman in the woods, the only Asian guy is a nonsense talking maniac, and the only Hispanic is a "chola" character - it's not making the cut.

*mythical POC can only operate on an individual basis.

We must go back to the groundbreaking epic, Birth of a Nation to get to the root of the "White men good, all others bad" scenario. White men were heralded as saviors during and after reconstruction. Self-appointed 'White Knights' charged with the sole responsibility of protecting the sanctity of white womanhood from the licentious savage. Nothing has changed since then. The white man seeks to project an image of both patriarch and savior. Cops, A&E’s The First 48-- every cowboy movie or police drama since the 60’s are simply another variant of Birth of a Nation.

Instead of donning the robe of crusader/enforcer, he wears a blue uniform- or military khakis, patrolling the mean streets (both here and abroad) to keep ‘men of color’ in line. And much like George Bush’s, ‘we must fight them there so that we don’t have to fight them here’ mentality. Whites likewise fight POC in the inner cities so that they don’t have to deal with them in the suburbs and rural areas; the very heartland of America.

This belief bleeds into the entertainment industry and frankly I think whites just don’t care anymore. They’re too enamored with their own white skin/culture to care about diversity in film and television. We’re going to produce the shows ‘We’ like for our target audience, ‘Minorities be damned’. It seems every new vehicle out of Hollywood appears to have less and less people of color. They’re not even casting roles for ‘Token’ any more it seems.

Science fiction fantasy films- Dramas and Romantic comedies take place in ‘lily white worlds’ as if POC just didn’t exist. To quote Chris Rock: “All my Black friends have lots of White friends. All my White friends have one Black friend.” We shouldn’t be surprised to see this social trend play itself out in the movies. The superiority of ‘White sexuality/beauty’ must be advanced and preserved as the standard for all that comes after it. And for those whites who complain that they don’t have their own channel, they need only tune into the Syfy channel.

Fundamentally, whites just prefer to be with other whites and they’re getting fed-up with us having a problem with it. "Always playing the race-card," they say. "Get over it!" they say. "Its not about race or color," they stress. "So why is everyone in the movie white?" we ask. The pretty white kids with problems formulae is here to stay as long as whites control the media. So they’re reaction is one of passive-aggressiveness. The more we criticize/protest about them not promoting diversity in casting- newsrooms, print-media and government, the more they churn out movies without POC. Funny, you don’t hear any complaints coming from the target audience do you?

  10. Thank you for talking about this!!!!! I'm a movie buff and for years I looked forward to trailers and everything but all the movies coming out have been the "WHITE PEOPLE ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO MATTER" movies to the point that I'm just so tired of it. I don't even want to see Captain America because the market is over saturated with blonde white men protecting white women.

And here's what annoys Moi. Movies without POC are actually fine by me, but I need movies without WP to balance it out. That's why I've gone onto Netflix, and specifically requested either POC TV shows and comedies from here, or foreign dramas from countries of color.

Something tells me that if movies came out with all-POC casts, they'd outsell films with only WP - and white America cannot handle that.

For some whites that would be the ultimate "WTF???" moment wouldn't it. Whites in their ignorance would lament, "what's with all of the black movies all of a sudden?” You know, we need to start making our own movies." I witnessed this same sentiment when too many 'women of color' took home the Miss America crown. Whites in forums murmured of wanting 'Their Own Beauty Contest'. Never-mind the fact that the whole Miss America thing was created with white supremacy/beauty in mind.

The demise of white culture- white preeminence in the world is what scares the hell out of them. It's why they spend so much time glorifying the past in Antebellum-themed bed and breakfasts, and confederate-themed events. You know, when things were simpler, and we knew who was on the top and who was on the bottom; before things got all crazy. All of these fears, currently being summed up in a commemorative license plate.

With regards to science fiction (and all white casts). When one considers the unlimited possibilities that is space; it’s just hard for me to grasp the logic that the further away from earth you travel, the ‘Whiter’ everyone becomes.

  15. Ankh, can you please comment on the hot mess that is a trailer for "Sucker Punch?" I roll my eyes whenever I watch it. I've been waiting for someone to comment on the race fail aspect of it forever.

I was really hoping someone wouldn't mention that film. Hot mess indeed.

    @ caribelle

I saw "Black Swan" this weekend. I was so surprised it didn't cue a fountain of vomit. I was genuinely shocked that Hollywood came out with a halfway decent film, and that Natalie Portman, of all people, was in it.

I estimate it will be 5-7 years before we see the next one.

"Something tells me that if movies came out with all-POC casts, they'd outsell films with only WP - and white America cannot handle that."

Actually Tyler Perry has already proven that. His movies have consistently been number one at the box office and have outsold bigger name white films. For all of the issues I have with his movies, he does prove that point.

Hell Karate Kid was a surprise box office smash this summer and it was a POC dominated film, so the precedent has already been proven.

And this overcompensating phenomenon is also why men of color catch so much shade from racist whites in the gay community.

Sometimes MadTv has a way of cutting through all of the bull to call a spade a spade. 'There are no Blacks on the TV screen', 'Pretty White kids...' and Sniggers say so much more then Al Sharpton ever could.
    I miss that show.

MAD tv is awesome. And I remember all these skits! LOL

When one compares hard-hitting racial commentary and cultural issues, Madtv beats SNL hands down. SNL is concerned more with penis jokes than it is with racial awareness. Lorne Michaels still hasn’t hired an actress to play Michelle Obama. Maya Rudolph has stepped up to the plate a few times, and Kenan Thompson dons woman's clothing on occasion; but there's still no full-time black female cast member.

My wish is that they hire Erica Ash to fill that void, but something tells me her talents would be wasted on the likes of that bunch. SNL is all about 'white male humor' and has been since Eddie Murphy left the show. To MadTv’s credit, the white actors proved their mettle time and time again by supporting the non-white cast members. 'Sniggers' alone would have made many white actors balk. Moreover, the social implications of, 'Nice White Lady' speaks for itself. These are gems in my book.

  26. Hmm, this is making me feel less weird about digging around for Nollywood films on the internet. Yes they're a little out there but a) it's people that look like me as regular folks in the movies b) OMG, Africans who are just about as urban as anywhere in the US? Okay, that was sarcasm but really, it is nice to know there's other options in the world.
