Underappreciated Actress of Color #44: Janina Gavankar

Fans of Janina recognize her role as the promiscuous lesbian "Papi" on The L Word.  It was especially cute when she fell in love with Pam Grier's character and tried to "convert" her.

Some of you nerds will recognize her as "Luna" in True Blood (her episode's due to broadcast in 2011).

While her character "Papi" was Latina, she's actually of East Indian descent in real life.  Born in 1980, Janina Zione Gavankar is a classically trained pianist, a devoted fashionista, and a sultry chanteuse (she redid Kanye West's "Love Lockdown").

In 2008, Janina was rightly nominated for an Asian Excellence Award.

  1. I loved her on the L-word! It annoyed me when they wrote her off the show.

  2. As much as I had issues with the L Word, she and Tasha were a breath of fresh air.

And Pam Grier can do no wrong in my eyes.

Baby, there was too.much.drama with that show. Needed a drink and a cigarette for every episode.

Nor in mine. She was one of the show's greatest assets, along with Leisha I-will-always-love-her Hailey.

  5. I liked her as Ms. Dewey, too. It was fun to type words into the search window and see what she had to say. I loved her on The L Word. I can't wait to see her in True Blood!
