Wow.... ironic how a society that denigrates Black men and women at every turn is real quick to use a Black man as the ultimate representation of sexuality that a white woman longs for. How many commercials have done this exact same thing? Made a Black man into nothing more than an object for a white woman's sexual fantasy fulfillment. This one takes it even further, because he is LITERALLY and object that she can carry off at will, removing him from his Black family. And, this is a SALE, so it implies that this man can be bought as if he was on the historical platform being auctioned off as a slave. And for 50% off, nonetheless. Ewwww....

notice the woman's name is Michelle...hmmm
Oh, Lord...I hadn't noticed that. Yea gods!
@ Victoria$64,000 question.
I haven't even seen this on TV yet but...wow. O_O
This is so wrong on sooooo many levels, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who noted that female mannequin's name is Michelle. I shudder to think what they might really be trying to imply with this commercial.Like I said, sick and wrong, sick and wrong.
Haven't seen you in a while!
I noted the Michelle reference... this commercial is just eye roll worthy
Old Navy needs to be court marshalled.
Doesn't Old Navy have any GOOD Black friends that would have told them that commercial was NOT okay?
Yes, they do, and those friends did, but then Old Navy told them to lighten up & quit being so sensitive, and that this was a commercial for a post-racial society.
I actually wrote a blog post about it, and when I submitted it to reddit, the first comment I got was that I need to lighten up, and that the commenters Black "friends" use the stereotype of Black male sexuality to get laid, as if the fact that a few of his "friends" are not offended means no one should be.
LOL @ Witchsistah Yes, this is definitely not an accident folks...and the wife's name was Michelle, SMH.
@ JoannaCalled it! Racism is so predictable, isn't it?
@Ankhesen: Meh, life's been a bit crazy lately (I'm assuming your comment was directed at moi and not leoprincess, lol). But it's always good to reconnect and see that "post racial" America is still going strong. *Sarcasm*
wow, this is awful. And I've noticed that other old navy comercials have asian and black mannequins, but the real actors are white. I wonder what was the idea discussed during the brainstorm session for this campaign - because I believe it's impossible that everyone involved agreed with this shit.
@ carlosI always wonder about stuff like this. Not who comes up with it, so much as who signs off on it, authorizing funding for it, and genuinely thinks it's okay.
@ everyoneJoanna breaks it down very well here:Old Navy Commercial is an EPIC FAIL.
I have the feeling that the whole thing was subliminal, they didn't realize what they were doing! Ha ha, it always reveals, don't it?It's just their subconscious way of thinking! It's their prob, not ours, black folks!
I thought I was the only one!!! I couldn't believe this commercial it reminded me of this Italian one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Xrg0baPK0Racisms getting bold nowadays that means we're getting close to a breakthrough.
no, no...ON is trying to show how NON-racist they are; how progressive. this is how WP would see this ad, guaranteed:'she is non-racist cuz she'd not be into having sex w/black dudes if she was racist.'as a white guy i can definitely assert that's the thinking. sooo...by showing an ad w/a white chick who's so wild about BM, she'll steal an image of one, they, ON are totally 'colorblind'. they are so non-racist they DON'T CARE that a white girl wants to bang a black man. see how that works?another thing to rememmber, to most whites, colorblind is IT. the Goal. the perfection of non racism in action.
Or maybe some bitter white dude wrote the script, thinking he was being slick/selfless by making it seem like white women are breaking up "the black family".Or...there is still that whole "Michelle" angle....
