How FlashForward Went and Fucked Itself, Part II

It got canceled.  But gee...we didn't see that one coming a thousand miles away....

So yet another show with good-looking, talented actors of color (one of which was the only actor on the show to receive an award nomination; suck on that Zoey-haters) has been flushed down the toiled with the rest of American media's failures.

Semi-New Reasons Not to be Sad About Its Passing

1) Demetri Noh fathered Janis's baby, and now he's following Janis around like a puppy, getting rejected - again.  He's putting his fiancee on the backburner - again, even as John Cho recites hollow lines about how much he loves Zoey and wants to marry her.  Demetri gets dumped for sleeping with another woman.  There's a temptation to grow seriously annoyed with Demetri, but don't fall for it.  Always keep in mind who's writing the show, how limited their insight is and how self-centered and short-sighted they basically are.  Which brings me to....

2) Behold white heterosexual privilege, children; the writers obviously have no clue about what it means to be a lesbian, much less one trying to have a child.  At this point, I'm seriously picturing an all-white heterosexual staff sitting in a too-cushy conference room, sipping lattes and churning out this craptacular drama.  In many ways, the writers are treating Janis the way they treat POC on the show.  You recall how I complained POC were often used as mere scenery on the show.  'Tis slightly similar with Janis.  When they need her to "represent a population", the writers remind us that she's gay and portray her positively.  But since white privilege trumps all, they can make her the conveniently not gay white female eye candy and, in essence, turn her homosexuality into just another piece of scenery.

Trivia

* This show had a lot of British actors, some using their natural accents (Jack Davenport, Dominic Monaghan, and Neil Jackson) and some not (Sonya Walger, James Frain, and James Callis).  Either way, they all wasted their time flying in all from Europe, especially since the American dollar is worthless.  However, I am grateful for the Jack Davenport exposure, as I shall be paying much closer attention to him in future projects.  He has this sort of irresistable nerdy hotness which I just can't ignore. *shivers*

* When talking about the Mark-Olivia-Lloyd triangle, the savant Gabriel McDow (James Callis) insists that Olivia is meant to be with Lloyd, and "not that other one".  He refuses to refer to Mark by name until they meet face to face, which just amuses the living hell out of me.

The series (mercifully) ends next week on May 27, 2010.  *sigh*  It started off with so much promise!!!

*wrings hands*

  1. Tell me about it. The first half was great although not perfect, and the prospect of having an initially well-written Black and Asian couple on the show who were so steamy and in love attracted my attention from the get go. Plus great work by Courtney B. Vance, Famous Jett Jackson (sorry don't remember his name, guy who committed suicide) and other POC and it was great.

    >>Demetri Noh fathered Janis's baby, and now he's following Janis around like a puppy, getting rejected - again.<<

WHAT!! Ugh I am not surprised at all but still...really?

    >>You recall how I complained POC were often used as mere scenery on the show. 'Tis slightly similar with Janis. <<

I am not at all surprised it pulled a "Heroes" and used the POC as window dressings piled with White Privilege ugh.

It makes me even happier I was too busy to watch the insulting garbage that was the 2nd half of the season. I only wish better things for John Cho (who should have been the lead from the get go), Gabrielle Union, and the other POC cast members.

  2. It's about time I heard from you! Good to see you around again! (by the way, the actor whose name you can't remember is the sexy Lee Thompson Young)

Oh, girl....let me tell you how painful these last few eps have been.

Somewhere the creators are shaking their heads at what these deadbeat writers have gone and done with their show. I kept waiting for them to get it right but...well, you're a Doctor Who fan so I don't need to describe my disappointment to you.

In the meantime, I'm upset because Demetri and Zoey had sooooo. much potential. So much!!! Anyhoo, I'm disappointed, but not surprised.

  3. I heart John Cho on so many levels because after the baby revelation, it didn't seem as if he was actually trying to sell that bull anymore. I wonder if the director noticed just how pissed he was at the turn of events.

The thing that goads me the most is how the haters call Zoey a bitch for exiting the stage in a dignified manner, yet conveniently ignore the fact that Janis wanted to get pregnant in order to escape the triple agent/mole's life. Either she was speaking too fast or it didn't matter because they don't give a rat's ass about how much she used Dem anyway.

Straight or lesbian, I wouldn't fuck over my engaged best friend that way.

In the end, I only learned two things from this show. Fine ass Al Gough died for NOTHING! Zoey was ready to sacrifice it all for NOTHING!

It's intriguing how only the POCs (sans poor Dem) believed in Free Will!

On a positive note, I'm thrilled they briefly resurrected Lee Thompson Young **swims in fan girl heaven.**

  4. Lee Thompson Young had great chemistry with John Cho and would have made a better partner than Joseph Fiennes did as Mark. I liked Janis until they completely disrespected her character by making her hook up with Demetri.

I don't understand what is wrong with the people who write these shows. What is the point of creating dynamic POC and gay characters if they are going to ignore them to focus on douchie Mark, boring Dr. Guy, and improbably Jack Bauer wanna be guy with his plot device kidnapped daughter. If anything they all should have been the ones to jump off the building.

White privilege. There's absolutely nothing it can't ruin.

There's not enough "God, yes" in the world.

...gotta love being a black woman in America. I mean, when you're healthy, fashionable, have a good education and job, and devoutly stand by your fiance in all things, you're branded as unattractive and undeserving. You find out your fiance's going to die and try to do everything you can to stop it, and you're upgraded to "emasculating bitch". Your fiancee sleeps with another woman, and it's automatically your fault. And if you show a single ounce of emotion at all throughout this entire traumatic experience, you're upgraded even further to full-fledged leper.

You just gotta LOVE being a black woman in America.

  6. I wonder who the they will blame for the show's demise most likely POC.

I can't say that I am surprised it got cancelled, the series had so much potential but like you said Flashfoward fucked itself with an iron spike rod.

  7. Aiyo,

They're going to try to blame POC, but it's not going to work this time - I really don't think it will.

John Cho shone - and no one can deny that. I have never been more proud of him, and I think it's bullshit he hasn't garnered more awards - at least for the first half of the show (which I'm honestly willing to buy).

Not since West 32nd have I seen the full effect of his charisma. Cho's portrayal of Demetri Noh (excellent name, excellent character - ALL gone to waste) was the primary reason fans flocked to FF, and his relationship with Gabrielle Union made him all the more fascinating.

This is such a disappointment. I'm actually partially hoping they'll decide to bring this shit back under a Newer Regime, one with POC writers who will get it right.

*sigh* A pygmy can dream, right?

Everyone, head off to the Blasian Narrative. Please write some fic to correct the epic fails of this goddamn show.

  8. When FF first aired I was so intrugied by the premise of the show and the interesting characters that I became a dedicated viewer from the beginning. I was especially intrigued by Demetri and Zoey's relationship. I was incredibly excited that that the studio actually had the guts to put an asian and black couple in a relationship on mainstream TV who where both attractive, intelligent, wildy in love, and had massive amounts of natural chemistry. And then the writers went and took that left turn in Albuquerque and messed everthing up.

The minute that Demetri offered to father Janis's baby, I was done. The show had officially jumped the shark for me. I removed it from my DVR list and didn't watch another ep after that one. IMO, that whole storyline came out of left field and was out of character and demeaning for both them and poor Zoey. It seemed forced and contrived, and I certainly wasn't buying it from either of the actors (and I love me some John Cho).

Once again, the moral of the story is that no matter how BAMF a black woman is, no matter how smart, beautiful or ride or die she is for her man, she'll always get thrown overboard for a white woman. And I'm sick of it.

BTW, what the hell ever happened to Gina Torres' character? Did she ever make a reappearance after the first few eps? I love Gina Torres. She would have been a lot more interesting than boring Olivia whatever her last name was.

And in the highly unlikely event the show comes back, they can never fix that!

I wondered about that too! Gina Torres alone in a recurring role would've guaranteed several million followers, but no...can't have more than one WoC on the show...and can't that "one" appear in every eps.

Methinks Hollywood is simply threatened by WoC.

  10. I'm not holding my breath for the finale tonight--I wouldn't be surprised if Zoey isn't mentioned/doesn't make an appearance. She's served her purpose as far as the powers that be are concerned.

As much as these words make me twitch, they are so, so true.

  12. @Jasmin,

I haven't illegally downloaded the episode yet; however, if all the crowing on TWOP is any indication, Zoey didn't make an appearance. One "participant" even hopes she was on a plane when the new black out took place.

    Fuck them!!!

Methinks Hollywood is simply threatened by WoC.

Obviously. Apparently, we're the greatest threats to their regime. How they reached this conclusion escapes me though.

Moi, I'm happy and proud that I met you because it's so damned easy for me to forget all the melanin-challenged because I don't have to deal with them. But, I've got nieces (including one who was born five weeks premature because of the sheer stress my beautiful sister lives under every fucking day) and nephews and I must think about their futures.

  13. I finally saw the finale... I got nothing, as expected. In the drive-through group flash forwards, we can pretend that the paler hand that was placing a ring on the gorgeous brown one was Zoey and Dem.

A buddy of mine asked if I could forgive him for such a betrayal. For fucking the lesbian out of a misguided sense of friendship, probably, because for me the ultimate betrayal would be for the man I love to fall in love with someone else.

Could I forgive him for not believing in me when I was busting my ass to save his life? That's an entirely different story and I'm uncertain how he could ever make that up to me.

Although the fact that Zoey saved Dem's life seems to escape the "fans," it's the truth. Without her, his ass would have been dead, as planned.

How could he make this up to a sister?

  14. Hateya,

I just watched it and I'm reading the FF TWOP thread now.

I don't see how people don't understand that Demitri fathering a child with Janis makes it Zoey's problem too. He lives, she takes him back, and she has to reconcile herself with the fact that she won't have his first child, her kids will have a half-sibling, etc. And if Janis and Dem were such good friends she should have realized he wouldn't be interested in creating a child and not being a part of his/her life, especially given that said child will probably look like Dem somewhat.

It doesn't seem like he could give any reason that would explain why, when faced with death, he would want a child with his friend and not his fiancee.
